In Texas, waterfalls are a rather uncommon sight. Only a few waterfalls can be found in Texas, a state with such a large area. The Texas Hill Country, located close to the state’s centre, is the best area to go if you want to see the majority of the state’s waterfalls. Pedernales Falls and Gorman Falls are two waterfalls close to San Antonio that stand out in the surrounding landscape.

Other waterfalls, like those at Hamilton Pool and Krause Springs, plunge into sizable pools that invite swimming and exploring. Less than an hour from Austin, waterfalls may be found at Krause Springs and Hamilton Pool.

Due to the river’s rapid descent in constrained spaces, swimming is not permitted at Pedernales Falls. A fun activity to do while visiting is rock hop around the dynamic area. Pedernales Falls is a fantastic picnic location in the Hill Country because of the close cold water and the abundance of spots to have a packed lunch.

Hamilton Pool Preserve, a well-liked recreational area produced by a tumbling 50-foot waterfall, is located an hour’s drive from the Texas Capitol in Austin. The two waterfalls in McKinney Falls State Park are connected by a network of hiking trails, and parking is accessible close to each one.

McKinney Falls is a popular weekend destination in Austin’s backyard. Furthermore, Austin typically has beautiful weather. Purchasing a Texas State Park Pass will save visitors money.

Rainfall determines whether or not either of the park’s falls will occur, and significant rains may cause Onion Creek to overflow.

5. Krause Springs, Spicewood

A well-liked swimming spot in Spicewood, 30 miles west of Austin, is Krause Springs. This private property is family-owned and -operated and has over 30 natural springs and a sizable natural pool that drains into the neighbouring Lake Travis (one of the best lakes in Texas). Large granite outcroppings and two cascading waterfalls can be found surrounding this natural pool.

Krause Springs visitors must pay a day-use fee. Affordable primitive campsites are also available, and they are suitable for both tent camping and RV camping. At Krause Springs, a man-made pool tempts visitors to cool off and engage in pastimes like sunbathing. A lovely butterfly garden and more than 100 acres of Texas Hill Country are available for visitors to enjoy at the facility.

6. Dolan Falls, Devils River

Between the Chihuahuan Desert and the Hill Country, in Texas’ untamed southwest, is where you’ll find the Devils River. The spring-fed river here offers some of the state’s most pristine kayaking.

Kayaks and canoes interested in sailing the Devils River must be prepared for minimal assistance along the way and have some prior boating experience. The Devils River is difficult not only because of its remote position but also because of difficulties like Dolan Falls.

At Baker’s Crossing, most kayakers start their multi-day trips on the Devils River. Many must portage to the thundering Dolan Falls, which are about 16 miles downriver. Del Norte Unit of Devils River State Park offers easier access to Dolan Falls. It’s around one river wide.

7. Madrid Falls, Big Bend Ranch State Park

Big Bend Ranch State Park, located in West Texas, spans a vast area of 300,000 acres, including Madrid Falls. Despite being one of Texas’ highest waterfalls, it isn’t the most well-known or visited waterfall because of how well-hidden its importance is.

The distance from the waterfall’s visitor centre is what discourages crowds. In order to get to the trailhead and the vistas, this backcountry journey requires a long drive.

8. Westcave Waterfall, Westcave Preserve

Another stunning waterfall close to Austin is protected by Westcave Preserve between Hamilton Pool and Pedernales Falls. At Westcave Preserve, a 40-foot waterfall carves out a gorgeous pool and grotto. The only opportunity to view and appreciate this water-filled wonder is on one of the preserve’s guided tours.

Weekends offer guided tours of the Westcave Grotto, although bookings are strongly advised. The trek starts in the dry uplands and falls into a limestone cleft, where the waterfall appears to appear out of nowhere. Westcave provides additional activities including upland nature excursions in addition to the guided grotto tour.

9. Wildcat Hollow Waterfall, Dinosaur Valley State Park

A beautiful waterfall makes a dramatic entrance into a state park that is best renowned for its dinosaur footprints after a significant downpour. The park’s northernmost waterfall, Wildcat Hollow, is reached along a freshly defined trail that also passes other beautiful vantage points. Only during heavy downpours does the roughly 50-foot Wildcat Hollow Waterfall flow.

Visitors must see the Dinosaur Trackway in the state park. Ironically, high water levels are ideal for seeing the waterfall because they cover the Paluxy River’s trackway. Ideally, visitors should stay a few days and spend the night at the campground located within the park to really appreciate it.

10. Wichita Falls

Located in north-central Texas, two hours northwest of Dallas, Wichita Falls is a cluster of unusual man-made waterfalls. A flood in the 1800s wiped away the first waterfalls from which the nearby town got its name. Since Wichita Falls on the Wichita River was reconstructed, drivers travelling south on Interstate 44 can now see the waterfalls from their vehicles.

For those that climb to Wichita Falls, the view of the landscape is more rewarding. Users can join the Wichita River Trail at the close-by Lucy Park and travel less than a mile to reach the falls. A fantastic photo opportunity is provided by the flowing falls and the well-kept greenery surrounding them.
