3 Open Air Cinemas to Visit in Summer in Paris

In Paris, you’ll learn that when the weather is pleasant the last place you want to be is indoors. If you’re a film lover or simply enjoy the fun pastime of watching movies with friends, don’t waste a sunny evening inside your apartment or a dark movie theater.

It gets pretty hot in the summers, and when you’re not eating at the most Instagram worthy restaurants, birding through the charming cobblestone streets, or drinking at a hip terrasse, you should be sure to grab some friends and watch an outdoor film.

Imagine yourself lounging in a French park, enjoying the sunset, sipping on a class of rosé, and watching a film with hundreds of other people from around the globe. Not to mention, France is known for its incredible film making and Ìýbeing a ³¦¾±²Ôé±è³ó¾±±ô±ð (cinema lover) is part of the culture here.

Below are the 3 open-air cinemas in Paris worth spending an evening at. Take part in this fun, relaxing activity and see how many of the below films you can catch this summer!

1. La Villette Open-Air Film Festival

One of the most exciting events of the summer season is the La Villette open- air film festival, located in east Paris (Metro Line 5 or Tramway Line 3b). For an entire month, July 17 to August 18, Parc La Villette will host movie screenings from Wednesday to Sunday.

Bring your own blankets and chairs to sit on, or rent some deckchairs if you prefer. Screenings begin at night between 9:30 pm and 10:30 pm depending on the date. You can BYOB as open glasses, bottles, and cans are allowed! However, leave your dogs at home for this outdoor activity because pets aren’t allowed at the festival. The theme of this year’s selection: Tomorrow- how do film director’s portray tomorrow’s world? 25 movies about 25 different visions on what the world might become.

With screenings of “Blade Runner 2049”, “Erin Brockovich” by Steven Soderbergh, “Isle of Dogs” by Wes Anderson, and many more, the festival is sure to be a hit among people of all ages.

All screenings are free and located at one of most symbolic locations, a large grassy field perfect for an outdoor movie night, known as The Triangle.

2. Moulin Rouge Rooftop Cinema

Have you heard? The Moulin Rouge is hosting movie screenings this summer for free on Wednesdays on its rooftop in the 18th arrondissement. How impressive would it be to watch a classic film on the rooftop of such an iconic film location? The best part is that its free!

The screenings take place from July through early September, and the film selection is pretty diverse, from Wes Anderson’s Bottle Rocket to Greg Mottola’s Superbad.ÌýÌýIf you get thirsty, don’t worry, the screening takes place at the rooftop bar, so you can sip at a mojito while laughing (or crying) during the films.

For the full experience, be sure to take a walking tour of the Montmartre district before visiting the rooftop cinema. I know I’ll be adding this to my Paris bucket list for sure. You can check out the full schedule or see below.Ìý

3. Château de Vincennes:ÌýUne toile sous les étoiles

Take advantage of the city’s lesser known historical landmarks by visiting the Chateau de Vincennes for a movie night out with friends. The location is convenient as it is accessible by metro (Line 1). This festival is much shorter and offers three different film screenings this summer.

The option to lounge on a castle lawn while enjoying a free movie has never been more tempting. One of the films they’re showing this summer is one of my favorites, the jazzy Oscar-winning musical, La La Land. Imagine hearing Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone singing City of Stars while watching the film directly under the Parisian stars at a famous castle. Sounds like it could be a scene out of the film itself!

Be aware that you can’t bring outside drinks (food is allowed), but if you prefer to eat there, there is a crêpe stand if you get hungry! Check out the schedule below!

Thursday, July 4th: Au revoir là-haut by Albert Dupontel

Friday, July 5th: La La Land byÌýDamien Chazelle

Saturday, July 6th:Ìý La famille Bélier by Éric Lartigau
