1. Kilimanjaro Restaurant 

Located on Rapenburgerplein, this restaurant offers an array of food from various African regions as well as some random exotic meats such as crocodiles.

Here, they serve dishes from various regions all over Africa. Most of these dishes are served with rice or couscous and a variety of vegetables. The meals are freshly prepared daily on-site.

Jollof, the West African rice, is the most popular meal. It is made with fish and five or more types of vegetables simmered in a boldly flavored sauce. The sauce is made with tomato, tamarind, bay leaves, parsley, onions, and garlic.

This sauce is then used to pan-fry the rice before serving. All meals can be ordered spicy or extra spicy.

This restaurant specializes in West African cuisine. They have good food and a very calm and relaxing atmosphere.

They have perfectly cooked soup, fish, and suya. This Restaurant is famous for its great service and friendly staff members who are always ready to help.

3. African Kitchen Restaurant 

African Kitchen, in the heart of southeast Amsterdam (Zuidoost), offers West African and international cuisine. Their colorful décor focuses on  African culture.

The restaurant has beautiful natural scenery. They offer nothing but high-level African hospitality and all that is African. 

The tilapia fried fish with Jollof rice and cassava with tomato onion sauce is the best with an amazing taste.

Selam Afrika specializes in delicious dishes from Ethiopia and Eritrea. One can reserve a table or not and just walk in or order for delivery via food delivery apps. 

They have vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free meals upon request. Meats are also available. Their authentic Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine is very tasty. You can also order both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

This is an Ethiopian restaurant in Amsterdam, that is cozy and affordable where you can enjoy delicious authentic dishes. The restaurant is named after the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, which means “new flower”. 

Their most popular dish is a combination of beef and lamb cut into small pieces, chicken drumsticks with Ethiopian spices, vegetables, lentils, spinach, salad, cottage cheese, and eggs in highly-seasoned, spicy red sauce. It is a traditional festive meal.

7. Restaurant Azmarino

At Restaurant Azmarino, Amsterdammers and visitors from all over the world come together for a plate of keywot or other unique dishes from Eritrea and Ethiopia.

They have a wide choice of meat dishes and vegetarian specialties that are traditionally prepared in mild or spicy sauces. The dishes are served on a large platter with a sourdough pancake, the Injera. You tear off a piece of the Injera and roll the dishes in it. Always eat with your clean hands.

They make the Injera with organic teff, an Ethiopian ancient grain that is rich in dietary fiber and vitamins. Teff is also gluten-free and legendary athletes Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele attribute their successes to eating teff.

8. Semai 

Semai means sky or heaven in Tigrinya, an Eritrean language, and Amharic, an Ethiopian language. The meaning of the word can be felt after entering the restaurant, it’s like falling into a warm heavenly African atmosphere. 

Semai is unique. The interior decor, the paintings, and the murals are beautiful. The service staff were really helpful, warm and friendly and have such lovely, genuine smiles.

The food is flavorsome and great value for money. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are available plus meat dishes too. all meals are served with injera and salad

9. Serengeti

Serengeti’s interior design seems like an African palace hidden among the shops. The decor inside is great. It has two floors with the upper floor offering a large private table for a party.

They have live music sometimes and their menu is Ethiopian but they have other African dishes like Fufu, soups, and Mozambique samosas. They make Mozambique meals on special order.

Their popular meal is a meat mix with extra chicken, a vegetarian mix, and kitfo tartar. The injera and the sauces balance out and are very tasty. The menu has other dishes zigni, meat platter, and sauce. All very flavorful.

10. Raïnaraï – Westerpark 

Rainaraï is an Algerian restaurant with locations in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In Amsterdam, the restaurant is located in the Westerpark with a large terrace for when the sun is shining.

The restaurant has a beautiful traditional interior. About half of the menu are vegan and vegetarian dishes and the other half are meat and fish dishes.
