10 Best Things to Do in Amsterdam Red Light District

Legalized marijuana isn’t all that Amsterdam is famous for. If you’ve not yet heard of the Red Light District; you’re in for a hell of a surprise.

In this district (more of a single strip in the center of Amsterdam), prostitution is legal, and there is also an abundance of cannabis-retailing coffee shops. This part of the city is historic, since it is the oldest district in all of Amsterdam, featuring traditional Dutch architecture like you’ve never seen it before.

Here are 10 things to do while in Amsterdam’s Red Light District:

1. Feast Your Eyes

Your first walk through the Red Light District is something you won’t easily forget, especially if you venture out after the sun has set.

The shop windows, lit buildings and buzzing energy makes it easy to understand why people come from all over the world to see it. Don’t feel too much pressure to get involved or spend money at first visit. Take it all in from a visual and energetic perspective, so the next time you come back you’re sure about what you intend to dabble in.

2. Explore a Museum

As I said, this district is about a lot more than just cannabis and sex. There are a number of great museums on the strip that tell the story of the Red Light District throughout the ages, and they are fascinating places to spend an hour or two in.

If archaeology is your forte, head to the Allard Pierson Museum run by the University of Amsterdam. Here you’ll find everything from Egyptian to Greek artifacts.

3. Stop by the Cannabis College… it’s Free!

The Cannabis College calls the Red Light District home, and it’s a place where one can get “an education” on cannabis safety and risks, regardless of if you’re intending to use it for medicinal or recreational purposes.

The staff here are wonderful and fully clued on everything the subject has to offer. If you’re new to the world of THC, this is a great place to start.

4. Find the Secret Church

This may be the last place in town you’d expect to find a place of worship, but the Catholic Church Amstelkring is an important part of Dutch history and is found on the Red Light strip.

The church is hidden inside of a number of canal houses, and was used to hide Catholics in 1578, when the area became Protestant by law.

5. Celebrate LGBTQ+ Culture

Right on the edge of the Red Light District one finds the start of Warmoesstraat; the official strip for all things LGBTQ+ friendly. Known for gay bars, restaurants and a thriving queer community, this vibrant part of town welcomes all, 7 days a week.

I recommend an early dinner at Getto, followed by the live cabaret shows that happen on site!

6. Attend a Strip Club or Sex Show

Booking the services of a prostitute isn’t everyone’s forte, which is why the Red Light District offers a number of alternative experiences that are still within the same niche.

There are many strip clubs and live sex shows that one can attend for a small fee. These tend to be as fun or as serious as you make them, so the ball’s in your court.

7. Explore Madame Tussauds Amsterdam

Now this is a museum that makes perfect sense being housed in the center of the Red Light District. The renowned Madame Tussauds hails from New York City, but one doesn’t have to venture so far west to enjoy the spectacle.

This establishment is more centered around music stars and actors, and you can be photographed with the likes of everyone from Ariana Grande to Afrojack.

8. Nurture Your Inner Child at TonTon Club Centre

If the strip is overwhelming for you, but you still want the enjoyment of a night out, then make your way to the TonTon Club for a buffet of classic arcade games, including foosball and air hockey.

They have great craft beer and bar nachos, and you can lose a good few hours here while your crew dabbles in other activities on the strip.

9. Expand Your Mind at the Prostitution Information Center

Prostitution rights are not only ethical, they are essential in ensuring the safety for all who choose to make money in this way. The official information center was started in the 90s by a young girl who became a prostitute at the age of 16 and longed to reform the awareness surrounding legalities and rights of this kind of work.

10. Enjoy a Coffee Shop

You don’t need to come to the Red Light District to dabble in legal cannabis, but this is the home of some of the best coffeeshops from the 1970s and older.

Because of the generally overstimulating nature of this district, take it slow on the joints and cakes. Always ask the staff what they recommend and work your way from there — less is often more in these types of environments!
