10 of the Best Coffee Shops in Amsterdam

On your first visit to Amsterdam, you’ll come to learn that the phrase ‘coffee shop’ means something very different here compared to elsewhere in Europe (and the rest of the world, at that).

In Amsterdam, a coffee shop is a place where one can go to purchase and smoke marijuana legally, accompanied by hot teas and coffees (and sometimes baked goods). If you’re simply looking for a place to drink good coffees, you’re in the market for a ‘cafe’ and not a coffee shop.

For the former, here are the best spots in Amsterdam:

1. Original Dampkring Coffeeshop in Amsterdam

As seen in the Oceans Twelve film, the Dampkring coffee shop is everyone’s favorite, from tourist to local. There is something incredibly welcoming about this spot, more-so than other ones around Amsterdam.

2. 420 Cafe in Amsterdam

Generally, alcohol is not served in coffee shops in Amsterdam, to prevent people from mixing too many vices and becoming unwell. At 420 Cafe you can sip on a beer while enjoying their extensive range of space cakes and prerolls.

Rest assured that the servers will monitor that no one is overdoing it, so don’t get offended when your third-beer-after-two-joints request is declined.

3. Amnesia Coffeeshop in Amsterdam

Another favorite spot, even for locals, Amnesia is an ambient spot with a generous menu. It is thought that they make the best milkshakes in town, as well as some delicious ham and cheese toasties to tame those munchies.
