Michael Kelland John Hutchence who was famously known as Michael Kelland was an Australian musician, singer, songwriter and actor. Michael was born on 22nd January 1960 to Sydney businessman Kelland Frank.

The father of Michael Kelland was a sea captain and make-up artist Patricia Glassop who was from England but settled in Sydney in 1922.

The interest of Michael鈥檚 father made them move to Brisbane and later to Hong Kong.
Michael Kelland and his younger brother Rhett attended Glenealy Junior school located in Hong Kong and later on Beacon High School in Kowloon Tong.

Michael had a great interest in swimming but his dreams were cut short when he had a bad arm injury. In his early teens, he attended King George 5 School before his family returned to Sydney in 1972 and joined Davidson High School.

This is where he met and befriended Andrew Farris who he used to jam with at their garage alongside Andrew鈥檚 brother. Andrew, later on, urged Michael to join his band and this is where his music career began.

1. Michael was a Promising Swimmer before Breaking his Arm

While living in Hong Kong with his parents and siblings, Michael Kelland was passionate about other activities rather than music. His great interest was in swimming and was showing great promise of becoming a good swimmer.

However, his swimming career was cut short before it even went far as he got a bad arm injury. This halted his interest in swimming.

2. Michael Performed his First Song in a Local Toy Store

After breaking his arm badly and halting his swimming career, Michael Kelland had to divert his attention to another area. He began showing interest in poetry and music.

Michael Kelland then performed his first song in a local toy store commercial while they were still living in Hong Kong. This was the beginning of his musical journey which bloomed later on.

3. Michael Joined a Band at 12 Years after his Family Returned to Sydney

In 1972, the family of Michael Kelland John Hutchence relocated back to Sydney from Hong Kong. His father bought a house in Belrose near the Northern Beaches.

Michael Kelland then joined Davidson High School where he met and befriended Andrew Farris. Michael and Fariss became best friends who used to jam together with Andrew鈥檚 brothers in their garage.

In the same year, Andrew Farris managed to convince Michael Kelland to join his band. The band consisted of Doctor Dolphin alongside Kent Kerny and Neil Sanders.

Garry Beers, a bass guitarist and Geoff Kennelly (drummer) who were from Forest High School completed the lineup of this band. Michael was the vocalist of this newly formed band.

They made their debut on 16th August 1977 at Whale Beach, located 40 kilometres North of Sydney.

4. Michael鈥檚 Parents Separated and Moved with his Mother to California

In 1976, the parents of Michael Kelland, Kelland Frank Hutchence and Patricia Glassop separated. Michael was forced to relocate with his mother and half-sister Tina to California, United States.

This got him separate from his newly formed band but that was short-lived. The mother of Michael Kelland later returned to Sydney where he reunited with Andrew and the band.

5. Michael became the Spokesperson of the Band and Co-Wrote all their Songs

Michael, Andrew and the other members of the band performed as The Vegetables. However, they later on renamed their band INXS in 1979.

Michael became the spokesperson of the band INXS who was making great music and attracting larger audiences. Alongside Andrew Farris, Michael Kelland co-wrote almost all the songs of their band.

Michael and the band were proud of their progress as their albums were written in a short space of time. 鈥淢ost bands shudder at the prospect of having 20 years to write their first album and 4 days for their second. For us, it was good.鈥 Michael spoke on their work.

6. Michael鈥檚 Co-Founded Band Sold over 75 Million Records Worldwide

Since their debut, the INXS band were making major headlines and hits across the world. They were involved in top hit songs across Australia and the rest of the world.

Michael Kelland and the INXS band sold more than seventy-five million records worldwide during their active seasons. This achievement got them inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001.

7. Michael was Involved in Several Public Brawls making him Dubbed 鈥榃ild Man of Rock鈥

Michael Kelland became a famous man in the public scenes while with the band INXS. However, this did not come in a good way as he was involved in several public brawls.

The public brawls got made London tabloids brand him as the 鈥榳ild man of rock.鈥 Michael had romantically linked to Kylie Minogue, Belinda Carlisle, Helena Christensen and Kym Wilson.

In August 1992, Michael was having a ride with Helena Christensen on a street in Copenhagen where he refused to pave way for a taxi. The taxi driver assaulted and made him fall over the roadway and suffered a skull fracture.

8. Michael almost Lost his Sense of Smell and Loss of Taste from Fractured Skull

The assault incident on Michael Kelland while in Copenhagen left him with a fractured skull. Michael refused to sort out treatment from a doctor which almost cost him his health.

Michael was left with an almost complete loss of sense of smell and a significant loss of taste. His injury got him to a bad level of depression that increased his levels of aggression.

His band colleagues then revealed that Michael Kelland underwent rough times where he threatened to kill himself after the fracture injury incident.

9. Michael Assaulted a Photographer at a Time Media Scrutiny on Him was Intense

In the mid-1990s, Michael Kelland found himself in media scrutiny after his affair with Paula Yates, a television presenter and writer was discovered. Yates was married to singer and Live Aid Bob Geldof but had an affair with Michael that led to her divorce.

At one moment, while Michael and Yates were on their usual walks, a photographer was following them. Michael was mad at the photographer and assaulted him in public.

10. Michael Committed Suicide, Autopsy Revealed He was Depressed and on Influence of Alcohol

On 22nd November 1997, Michael Kelland died at the age of 37. His death sparked a huge controversy as his body was found in his hotel room after an argument he had with Yates’s ex-husband.

Police reported revealed that he had committed suicide using his snakeskin belt that had strained his head forward. A later autopsy report indicated that Michael was depressed and under influence of alcohol and other drugs.

Michael Kelland John Hutchence might have had a bad ending, but he is always celebrated as an exceptional singer and was a role model to many.
