10 of the Best Australian Soccer (Football) Players of All Time


 

The Australia men’s national soccer team represents Australia in international men’s soccer. Officially nicknamed the Socceroos. The team is controlled by the governing body for soccer in Australia, Football Australia, which is affiliated with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the regional ASEAN Football Federation (AFF).

The two times confederations champion,  four-time  OFC Nations Cup champion, and 2015 AFC Asian Cup champion, have the best players any national team could want.

Australia has produced great talents apart from those who managed to get positions in the National team. Therefore, in the article are ten of the best Australian soccer players of all time.

1. Ajdin Hrustic

Ajdin Hrustic was born on 5 July 1996. He is an Australian professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Serie A club Hellas Verona and the Australia national team. Hrustic played youth football with South Melbourne and Schalke 04 before moving to FC Groningen, where he made his professional debut in 2017.

In 2020 he signed for the German football club Eintracht Frankfurt. On 22 May 2017, Hrustic was named in the Australian national side’s 30-man preliminary squad for June, including the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, a friendly against Brazil, and a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia.

2. Awer Mabil

Awer Bul Mabil was born on 15 September 1995. He is an Australian professional soccer player who plays as a winger for La Liga club C谩diz. He represents the Australian national team.

Born a South Sudanese refugee in Kenya, Mabil played youth soccer at the South Australian National Training Centre and with Adelaide United. He made his senior debut for Campbelltown City, before making his debut in the A-League for Adelaide United in 2013.

On 16 October 2018, Mabil made his senior Australian debut against Kuwait in an international friendly match at the Al Kuwait Sports Club Stadium. Mabil played in qualifying matches for the 2022 World Cup. On 22nd September 2022, he scored his first home international goal against New Zealand in a 1-0 win in a friendly at Lang Park.

3. Riley McGree

Riley Patrick McGree born on 2 November 1998 is an Australian professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for EFL Championship club Middlesbrough and the Australian national team.

McGree played youth football for Gawler, the FFSA NTC, and Adelaide United before starting his professional career with Adelaide United in 2016. He joined Club Brugge of the Belgian top flight in 2017 and spent two loan spells back in Australia with Newcastle Jets and Melbourne City before returning to Adelaide United.

McGree was first called up to the Australian national team in 2017, having previously played for Australia under-17 in 2013.

4. Denis Genreau

Denis Genreau born on 21 May 1999 is a professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Ligue 1 club Toulouse. Born in France, he plays for the Australian national team.

While playing for Melbourne City, Genreau made his debut against Perth Glory at the 80th-minute mark at age 17. Given Genreau’s birth, and parental links, to France, he was eligible to represent both France and Australia at the international level.

Genreau made his international debut with the Australia national team on 7 June 2021 in a World Cup Qualifier against Chinese Taipei.

5. Mathew Ryan

Mathew David Ryan born on 8 April 1992 is an Australian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Danish club F.C. Copenhagen and captains the Australia national team. Ryan played youth football for Marconi Stallions, Blacktown City, and Central Coast Mariners.

He made his senior debut for Blacktown before moving to the Mariners’ senior squad in 2010. In 2013, Ryan moved to Club Brugge, where he played for two years before joining Valencia.

He made his senior international debut in 2012 and has since established himself as Australia’s first-choice goalkeeper, effectively succeeding his childhood idol Mark Schwarzer.

He played at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups as well as the 2015 and 2019 Asian Cups, winning the Best Goalkeeper award at the 2015 tournament which his country won on home soil.

6. Aziz Behich

Aziz Eraltay Behich was born on 16 December 1990 and is an Australian professional footballer who plays as a left back and left winger for Scottish club Dundee United and the Australia national team.

Behich was called up to the Australia Under-23 side by coach Aurelio Vidmar for a friendly match against Japan’s Under-23 side at the Tohoku Denryoku Bigswan Stadium, Niigata on Wednesday 1 June 2011.

On 14 June 2011, in preparation for the 2012 AFC Men’s Pre-Olympic Tournament, Behich featured in a 6鈥0 win against Singapore under-23 where he scored Australia’s sixth goal in the 90th minute.

Behich was called up to the Australian national team by Holger Osieck for a friendly match against South Korea on 14 November 2012. In May 2018 he was named to Australia’s 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

7. Jackson Irvine

Jackson Alexander Irvine was born on 7 March 1993. He is an Australian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for 2. Bundesliga club FC St. Pauli. He has previously played for Celtic, Kilmarnock, Ross County, Burton Albion, Hull City, and Hibernian.

Irvine played for Scotland at the under-19 level, but subsequently played for the Australia national team and was selected in their 2018 FIFA World Cup squad.

In September 2013, Irvine received his first Australia senior national team call-up and was selected for two matches. After being on the bench for one game, Irvine made his debut coming on as a substitute for Mile Jedinak in the 83rd minute, in a 3鈥0 win over Canada on 15 October 2013. In May 2018, he was named to Australia’s 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

8. Tom Rogic

Tomas Petar Rogic was born on 16 December 1992. He is an Australian professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for West Bromwich Albion and the Australia national team.

Rogic has 53 caps for Australia, scoring ten goals. He has also represented Australia in futsal. Rogic made his debut for the Australia national team on 14 November 2012 as a substitute in a 2鈥1 friendly victory over South Korea. He was also part of the squad in the 204 World Cup Qualifiers.

9. Mitchell Langerak

Mitchell James Langerak was born on 22 August 1988. He is an Australian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for J1 League club Nagoya Grampus. Langerak signed his first professional contract in February 2007, with A-League club Melbourne Victory.

Langerak was selected in the Young Socceroos squad to play in the 2006 AFC Youth Championship. Langerak received his first senior national team call-up in March 2011, named by coach Holger Osieck as a member of the 17-man squad to play Germany in a friendly match.

Langerak made his debut for Australia’s senior team in an international friendly against France on 12 October 2013, a match in which the Socceroos were thrashed 6鈥0, courtesy of goals from Franck Rib茅ry, Olivier Giroud, Yohan Cabaye, Mathieu Debuchy, and Karim Benzema.

10. Fran Kara膷i膰

Fran Kara膷i膰 born on 12 May 1996 is a professional soccer player who plays as a right back for Serie B club Brescia. Born in Croatia, he represents the Australian national team.

In May 2018 he was named in Australia鈥檚 preliminary 26-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. On 25 May 2018, Kara膷i膰 was officially cleared by FIFA to represent Australia, his father being born there. He was then cut from the final squad.

Karacic was again called up to the Australian squad for a series of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying games in June 2021 where he made his international debut against Kuwait.
