1. Two World Heritage Sites Meet here

The Daintree Rainforest which is within the national park extends out to the coast, where it meets the Great Barrier Reef. The Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef are the only two Heritage Sites in the world to exist side by side. The  rainforest can not only be found inland; a section of it extends out to the coast, alongside the Great Barrier Reef.

Officially added to the world heritage list in 1988 the Daintree Rainforest became protected under the World Heritage. It covers an area of approximately 12,000 square kilometers and stretches from Townsville to Cooktown. Furthermore, the park is known as the Wet Tropics. The area has the highest number of plant and animal species in the world that are rare or threatened with extinction.

The Daintree Rainforest and park got their name from Richard Daintree, a notable geologist and photographer in the 19th century. Richard started his career prospecting for gold.  He moved to the state of Queensland鈥檚 and started his photography practice capturing the local communities and the importance of gold.

His work helped attract several British emigrants to the colonies. He became famously known as a pioneer in the field of photography and discovered numerous gold and coal fields for the local government. In return, multiple features in northern Queensland were named after him, including the Daintree Rainforest, the Daintree River, the Daintree village, and the Daintree National Park.

3. It is the oldest continuously growing tropical rainforest

The numerous trees of the rainforest are populated with hundreds of different types of beautiful bird species. They include the endemic tooth-billed and golden bowerbirds, lovely fairywrens, amoung others.

Daintree national park has bee labeled by Wikipedia as the 鈥淒aintree Important Bird Area,鈥� . It is an area of about 2,656 square kilometers (025 square miles) which is important for the conservation of birds. There are also some incredibly grumpy and dangerous birds roaming around in these forests, including the endangered Southern Cassowary.

5. Australia鈥檚 largest rainforest

Daintree National park is the home to Australia鈥檚 largest area of continuous rainforest, covering an area of 1200 square kilometers. In addition, it also covers an enormous 20% of Australia鈥檚 land mass.

Moreover, it鈥檚 home to some of the largest tropical tree species in the world. Some of these species are like the Bull Kauri, which grows up to 50 meters in height and 2.7 meters in diameter. The forest is around 180 million years old and as big as Sydney.

6. It Is Home to around 400 rare and threatened Species

There are so many endangered species including the giant Southern Cassowary, elusive Bennett鈥檚 Tree Kangaroo and the White Lipped Tree Frog, the world鈥檚 largest frog.

Other endangered species found in Daintree Rainforest include Bennett鈥檚 tree kangaroo and the spotted-tailed quoll. The spotted-tailed quoll and Bennetts tree kangaroo are rated 鈥楴ear Threatened鈥� on the IUCN Red List. The southern cassowary is rated 鈥榁ulnerable鈥�.
