This world-famous train is widely known for the legendary route it takes through the heart of Australia. The trip offers wonderful views that are ever changing.  The legendary Aussie train links Darwin in the north to Adelaide, 1,850 miles away in the south.

It has become one of the world鈥檚 longest trains Consisting of 44 carriages and two locomotives. But how much is known of this remarkable train? Below I have listed the top 10 unbelievable facts about the Ghan train

1. The Ghan railway route was named in honor of the Afghan cameleers

This beautiful train takes its name from the Afghan cameleers, who travelled to Australia in the 19th century. These cameleers helped open up inland Australia to European settlers by ferrying goods and supplies with their 鈥榮hips of the desert鈥.

Their most famous journey was previously dubbed 鈥楾he Afghan Express鈥 before being shortened to 鈥楾he Ghan鈥. When The Ghan railway route was opened it was named in honor of them. This was because the Afghan cameleers who would laboriously transport vital goods to remote Outback Australian communities prior to the rail line being built.

2. It鈥檚 extremely long

This legendary Aussie train has become one of the world鈥檚 longest trains. During peak season, The Ghan can reach almost a kilometer long. A typical Ghan runs with 36 carriages, dedicated crew cars, dining carriages, kitchens, luggage cars and power vans.

The Ghan travels 3000 kms between Darwin and Adelaide in 3 days which is an incredible distance to cover in such a short time.

3. The Cinematic Views

Whilst onboard the Ghan train, you get to be astounded by the different scenes outside your window. The train moves from the croc-filled waters of Darwin, to the burnt orange earth around Alice, the silvery scrubs of South Australia and flat-topped Flinders Ranges outside Adelaide.

There is so much beauty to enjoy on your trip on the train. Moreover, you get to also see the purple blaze of an Outback sunset and spy emus and kangaroos bouncing alongside the train.

The entire Ghan train journey from Adelaide to Darwin was condensed into a three-hour show with no voiceover. SBS television network televised The Ghan: Australia鈥檚 Greatest Train Journey. This uninterrupted, 17-hour livestream show revealed the 鈥渟tunning topographical vistas and dramatic palette changes鈥 of The Ghan train journey in real time.

With no commercials breaks just hours of uninterrupted viewing and tracks. The lengthy, real-time documentary shows Australia鈥檚 stunning landscape from the train driver鈥檚 perspective. This is a view that many people would never get the chance to experience in real life.

6. Its food is regionally-inspired

Food, wine and other accompaniments are some of the favorites on The Ghan. Taking inspiration from the diverse environments the train travels through, it incorporated it into the menu. Its culinary team have chosen to work with local suppliers, farmers to create a regionally-inspired menu.

This furthermore, is accompanied by all-inclusive fine wines and beverages. Some examples include saltwater barramundi and grilled kangaroo fillet.

7. The Ghan鈥檚 journeys can be done in full or part

Travelers and guests aboard the Ghan can choose to travel on a section of the journey. The journey can start or end in Alice Springs, or complete the full Adelaide to Darwin stretch. During each journey there are 49 onboard crew providing service to guests as well as maintenance and operational duties.

8. It was the country鈥檚 second-largest civil engineering project

Construction of the Alice Springs to Darwin line is believed to be the second-largest civil engineering project in Australia. Line construction began in July 2001, with the first passenger train reaching Darwin on 3 February 2004.  After an incredible 126 years of planning the train cost a whopping price of $1.3 billion. The Ghan鈥檚 arrival in Darwin signified a new era of tourism in the Northern Territory, making travel to the region more convenient.

9. The trips weren鈥檛 all smooth sailing

In earlier days, The Ghan service was notorious for delays due to the washouts of the track. There was always a flatcar behind the locomotive that carried spare sleepers and railway tools. This was to allow passengers and crew could repair the line.

Moreover, the journey took longer, it used to be possible to board The Ghan in one season and disembark in another due to the length of the journey. Nowadays, although the journey is shorter, the contrast between the cool, temperate climate of Adelaide and the hot, desert climate of Alice Springs is just as striking.

10. It holds an annual tribute

The Ghan train was used to transport troops in World War II, and to this day there is an annual tribute trip between Adelaide and Darwin. This annual tradition is held to pay tribute to the ANZAC war veterans. On the ANZAC Day, The Ghan embarks on a four-day commemoration of the glories and sacrifices of the Australian Armed Forces.

The Ghan played a vital role in transporting the troops during the Second World War and now almost 70 years on, The Ghan continues to celebrating these Australian heroes. The journey leads right through the heart of Australia, from Adelaide to Darwin, raising vital funds and awareness for the Returned Services League of Australia (RSL).

The first in a series of journeys highlights is a ride through the picturesque Flinders Rangers in an original Ghan 鈥榯roop train鈥. The journey then continues onto Coober Pedy where returned servicemen flocked in search of Opal after the Great War, living underground as they did in the trenches of Europe.
