The most popular and famous form of Indonesian music is gamelan, an ensemble of tuned percussion instruments that include metallophones, drums, gongs, and spike fiddles along with bamboo flutes. 

The music is overwhelmingly popular in neighboring countries. Here are the 10 most famous Indonesian singers.

1. Agnes Monica 

Agnes Monica Muljoto, professionally known as AGNEZ MO, is an Indonesian singer, songwriter, music producer, actress, dancer, model, and businesswoman.

She was born on 1st July 1986 in Jakarta, Indonesia, to a family of Chinese ancestry. As a bilingual singer who records in Indonesian and English, she is known for her image reinventions and musical versatility throughout her career. 

Mo is the most awarded artist in the history of Indonesia with over 190 awards. Her success in her homeland encouraged her to target the international music industry.

Sri Rossa Roslaina Handiyani, simply known as Rossa in Indonesia and Dato’ Sri Rossa in Malaysia, is an Indonesian singer and businesswoman. She was born on 9th October 1978 in Sumedang, West Java, Indonesia.

Rossa is one of the most popular artists in Indonesian and Malay-speaking countries and has won more than 115 awards. As a diva and hits maker, her beautiful songs are also sung by singers across generations.

Rossa started her career as a child singer and has released many hit singles that are very popular since then. Her albums are successful all the time and getting Platinum and Multi-Platinum is almost always guaranteed.

3. Anggun Cipta Sasmi 

Anggun Cipta Sasmi is an Indonesian-born French singer-songwriter and television personality. She was born on 29th April 1974 in Jakarta, Indonesia. 

Anggun possesses a three-octave contralto voice, which has been described as “husky”, “soulful”, and “distinctive” by music critics and she remains a household name when it comes to Indonesian vocal talent.

Anggun is one of the Asian artists with the highest album sales outside Asia, with her releases being certified gold and platinum. She’s had success on European and American record charts.

She is an inspirational diva that has been appointed as the global ambassador of the United Nations twice. She also does charity projects to help fight against AIDS.

4. Afgan

Afgansyah Reza is an Indonesian singer, songwriter, and actor. He was born on 27th May 1989 in Jakarta, and into a Muslim musical family of Minangkabau origin. He has a Bachelor in Economics from Monash University.

His career began when he and a few friends decided to record a private album. The producers at the studio offered him a contract when they heard him sing although he had never had any vocal training.

He won the Best Solo Male Vocalist Award in 2009. His music genres are Pop, R&B, soul, and jazz.

5. Rio Febrian 

Rio Febrian is an Indonesian singer who was born on 5th February 1981 in Jakarta, Indonesia. He was born to a mixture of Betawi and Javanese (Minahasa) parents.

His musical genres are Pop, Soul, and R&B. Since he was a teenager, he has been in the world of singing and has won various competitions and awards. He is married to Sabria Kono who is an actress.

Judika is a musician that was born on 31st August 1978, in Sidikalang, Indonesia. His music genre is Indonesian Pop. Blessed with a high vocal range, he is well known as one of the best male singers in Indonesia.

He has serenaded and captivated his fans through his powerful vocals both on stage and in the recording. He is married to Duma Riris Silalahi who was Miss World Indonesia in 2007 and they have two children.

He clinched the “Best Male Artist” award for three years in a row, from 2013 to 2015. Judika produced and hosted a special TV program that was meant to discover local musicians including talented composers.

7. Sandhy Sondoro 

Sandhy Sondoro is an Indonesian singer-songwriter. He was born on 12th December 1973 in Jakarta, Indonesia. This musician came from a musical family with tunes coming from his mother’s or father’s guitar every day.

At home, American pop, folk, jazz, and blues were played on a regular. His musical journey began in Germany where he was studying architecture.

Sandhy won the 2009 International Contest of Young Pop Singer New Wave, in Jūrmala, Latvia. He started to gain fame in his home country Indonesia after videos of his performances in New Wave were uploaded to YouTube.

8. Isyana Sarasvati

Isyana Sarasvati is an Indonesian singer-songwriter. She was born on 2nd May 1993 in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. She is a graduate of Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and London’s Royal College of Music. 

Isyana was introduced to music at the age of four by her mother. She plays piano, electone, flute, violin, and saxophone. Her music career in Indonesia began with several covers of popular songs uploaded on her YouTube channel.

This singer was listed on Forbes Indonesia’s 30 Under 30 list of inspiring young achievers, in the art, style, and entertainment category. She’s won several awards so far.

9. Vidi Aldiano 

Octavia Aldiano better known as Vidi Aldiano is an Indonesian singer, musician, and songwriter of Javanese and Minangkabau descent. His mother was a piano teacher and so Vidi could play the piano from an early age.

When Vidi was a teenager, he began to focus on the violin and when he was in high school, this singer joined a band.

Vidi is married to Sheila Dara, a film actor, and singer.

10. Maudy Ayunda 

Ayunda Faza Maudya popularly known as Maudy Ayunda is an Indonesian singer-songwriter, actress, author, and activist. She was born on 19th December 1994 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

She has released albums and single hits. In 2020, Maudy was listed on Forbes’ “30 Under 30 Asia” in the entertainment and sports category.

She is actively involved in the campaign against modern slavery. Maudy educates her audience about the realities of modern slavery and uses social media platforms to promote that message.
