Lake Goygol is a natural impounded lake located in Azerbaijan just in the footsteps of the Murovdag found in the Goygol District. The name of Lake Goygol is translated as 鈥淏lue Lake鈥� which depicts the purity of the water.

1. The Collapse of Mount Kapaz Led to the Creation of Lake Goygol

The beautiful Lake Goygol was formed as a result of an earthquake that took place on 25^th September 1139. After the earthquake occurred, it caused Mount Kapaz to collapse and the rock materials blocked the path of the Karekcay River.

The blockage of the river caused a diversion of the water flow which led to the creation of a lake with pure mountain water. As a result of the pure water, the lake was named Goygol.

2. The Nearby City was Renamed After the Goygol Lake

The city of Khanlar which was founded by the Helenendorf was renamed after Lake Goygol on 25^th April 2008. The founders of the city were the first German settlers who visited Azerbaijan in 1819.

Although the German were the first inhabitants of the city, they were the minority until 1941. The city had been renamed Khanlar in 1938.

3. Lake Goygol is Rich in Flora and Fauna
