1. The Tomb in Mausoleum is Dedicated to Pilgrimage

The tomb in the Nizami Mausoleum has been devoted to Pilgrimage for many centuries that have seen prominent people visit the place. Shah Abbas 1 who was the 5th king of Iran also visited the place where he camped just beside Nizami鈥檚 tomb.

Nizami Mausoleum also attracts a lot of residents to view the various writings of the great poet. The sculptures also show the early life during the 12th century which helps visitors to know their origin.

2. Nizami Whom the Mausoleum is Named After was Very Educated

Nizami, who was born in Ganja in 1141, was one of the most educated people of that time in Ganja. He later became very prominent worldwide as an author of Khamme.

The five collections of the poems showed not only his magnificent skills as a writer but also his philosophical and ethical views. Most of his great works in poems were devoted to love.

He also has other world-famous works which include 鈥淟ayli and Medzhnun鈥, 鈥淜hosrov and Shirin鈥 as well as 鈥淚skander-nameh鈥.

3. The Russo-Persian War Took Place Near Nizami Tomb

The tomb of Nizami was used as a battleground in 1826 in the battle between the Russians and the Persians. The Russian forces who were led by Ivan Paskevich defeated the Persian armies and forced them to retreat.

This was all recorded by a Russian diplomat and a composer named Aleksandr Griboyedov. The war ended later in 1828 with great losses to the Persian armies including loss of livelihood.

4. The Tomb Had Collapsed and Became a Wretched Brick Building

The tomb of the popular writer collapsed by the year 1840s which was witnessed by an Iran king named Naser al-Din Qajar. The king later described the condition of the tomb as a very wretched brick building.

The tomb was almost completely ruined during the early 20th century. Later in 1925, the remains of the poet were excavated from the ruins and reburied at the center of Ganja.

The leadership of Soviet Azerbaijan however, ordered the reburial of his remains and the construction of a temporary monument.

5. The Hazardous Emissions from the Nearby Plant Damaged the Building

In 1947, a new mausoleum was constructed after it had remained in ruins for very many years.

The reconstruction was done using the limestone on the entire mausoleum. Afterward, the government also constructed an aluminum production facility within the same area.

The hazardous emissions from the plant caused tremendous damage to the building which later collapsed in the late 1980s. The new mausoleum was constructed in 1991 after Azerbaijan regained its independence.

6. Nizami Mausoleum is Constructed Using Solid Granite Blocks

The beautiful Nizami Mausoleum has been constructed with solid granite blocks that were obtained from Ukraine. The tall cylindrical building is visible from a far distance and it has also been surrounded by a beautiful garden.

The entire structure also contains some spectacular statues for the remembrance of Nizami epic poems. Gorkhmaz Sujaddinov was the sculptor who was responsible for the creation of the statues.

7. Nizami Mausoleum was Opened by the President of the Azerbaijan Republic

In 2013, the new modern Nizami Mausoleum was constructed which was a four-storied building with the support of the Haydar Aliyev Foundation.

The modern-style building was officially opened by Ilham Aliyev, who was the president of the Azerbaijan republic during a ceremony held in Ganja in 2014.

The new modern building consists of a conference hall for about 100 people, 12 rooms, a caf茅, and an exhibition hall.

8. Mausoleum is the Home of Ancient Exhibits

Nizami Mausoleum has been home to about 418 ancient exhibits that are demonstrated in the building. There are also a total of 542 exhibits that are found in the Nizami Ganjavi Memorial House Museum.

Some of the most ancient exhibits found in the museum include the original Khamsa manuscripts. It also hosts some of the samples of Kurani-Kerim which were carried out by the Nizami Ganjavi International Center.

The exhibits are a major source of tourism in Nizami Mausoleum, especially for the writers to observe the old styles of writing.
