Alley of Honor of a popular memorial as well as a public cemetery that is located in Baku, Azerbaijan. The cemetery hosts the bodies of several prominent people including presidents, artists, and scientists.

Alley of Honor was established in 1948 resulting from an order that was made by the council of ministers of Azerbaijan. The entire cemetery has about 242 burials in total.

The cemetery is located in a serene environment which is very well kept while the statues and monuments decorate the entire site. It is easy to confuse the cemetery with a park due to the flat expanse of space as well as lots of trees for shade.

The area also receives a lot of visitors with several families that hang out and also have picnics near some of the monuments.

The Cemetery Hosts the Body of Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs

Alley of Honor is the home of the body of Mahmud Aliyev who was Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs. Mahmud Aliyev was born on February 1908 and later passed on in September 1958.

He held several positions in the republic of Azerbaijan which including head of the department of Medical Education of the Commissariat of People’s Health.

He was however appointed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan in 1944. After he died in 1958 he was laid to rest in the Alley of Honor.

The Body of Azerbaijan President is Buried in Alley of Honor

The serene environment is known to host the bodies of several prominent people one of them being Abulfaz Elchibey. Abulfaz Elchibey was born in 1938 and later passed on in 2000.

He also became the leader of the Azerbaijan Popular Front in the year 1990. He was also elected as the Azerbaijan president in 1992 but later overthrown in 1993.

After his death, he was laid to rest in the spectacular Alley of Honor. The monument above his grave is also one of the kinds which represent his leadership.

The cemetery hosts the body of Barshadly Eyyub Oglu who was the first Minister of Defense of Azerbaijan. Barshadly Eyyub Oglu was born in 1927 and later passed on in 1999 at the age of 71.

In 1991 he was appointed as the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces and he achieved many victories on the Karabakh front. After his death, he was buried in the avenue of the honored ones cemetery.

Alley of Honor Hosts the Body of Chess Grandmaster

The cemetery is the home of the popular chess grandmaster in Azerbaijan known as Vugar Gasim Oghlu. He was also internationally known and was ranked number 6 in the world.

He was born in 1986 and later passed on in 2014 at the age of 27. He won the title of chess grandmaster in 2002 and won the Athens in 2005. He was a very prominent person in Baku and after his death; a monument was unveiled on his grave in Baku on 24th July 2014.
