Although many call this fascinating building the Parliament, the correct name is actually the House of Parliament. Building this impressive structure took 17 years, from 1885 to 1902, based on the design by the architect Imre Steindl.

Unfortunately, the designer himself did not live to see the inauguration, since he died five weeks before.

The Hungarian Parliament Building, also known as the Parliament of Budapest after its location, is the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary, a notable landmark of Hungary, and a popular tourist destination in Budapest.

It is situated on Kossuth Square on the Pest side of the city, on the eastern bank of the Danube.

Furthermore, the Stone Museum houses carvings and the 1956 Memorial is a symbol of the 1956 Uprising against the Soviets.

The Crown jewels and other insignia lie in the Dome Hall of the Parliament Building. These jewels are guarded 24 hours a day by guards.

There is a change of guard every few hours which can be observed by the visitors coming on tour.

Kindly note that photography of the crown jewels is not permitted. So do not make that mistake. It may not be taken too kindly.

5. Visiting the Old upper house hall and upper house lobby

The Old Upper House Hall used to house the Upper House of Parliament till Hungary decided to turn into a House Government.

The Hall is used for conferences and official meetings at present. It is a resplendent room, with gold-plated decorations, and galleries.

Behind the podium, there are paintings of coats of arms of Hungary鈥檚 royal families. There is also seating for 453 people in this room.

The uniqueness of the Upper House Lobby is a hand knotted turquoise floor carpet where the pillars are adorned with statues of old Hungarian national groups and Hungarian crafts and culture.

The lobby has ornate gold gilded ceilings with paintings.

6. Exploring the parliament’s grand stairway

This stunning staircase is the epitome of beauty and opulence in the Hungarian Parliament building.

It has 96 stairs which are carpeted with a red carpet thus adding to the royal look of the building.

It connects the main entrance to Dome Hall. The speciality of this is the eight granite columns, the style of which is so unique that there are only 12 such columns in the world.

The windows are adorned with decorative stained glass panels. These beautiful stained glass windows are rich and decorative frescoes that tend to welcome visitors to the opulence of the Parliament Building.

7. Exploring the Dome Hall

The Dome Hall of the Budapest Parliament houses the Hungarian crown and royal insignia.

This dome has a rib vaulted ceiling replete with stained glass paintings on the windows.

On the base of the rib vaulted pillars, there are statues of Hungarian rulers on gold pedestals. It makes one to quite understand the rich culture and history of Hungary.
