Karen Kain, in full Karen Alexandria Kain, (born March 28, 1951, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada), a Canadian ballet dancer who became one of Canada鈥檚 finest and most internationally renowned dancers and a respected public figure.

The ballerina trained at the National Ballet School of Canada from 1962 and graduated from the NBC in 1969.

In January 1971 she made her debut in the challenging role of the Swan Queen in Swan Lake and she was promoted to principal rank the same year.

Karen Kain is one of Canada’s finest and most internationally renowned dancers. In her 28 years as a dancer with the National Ballet of Canada (NBC), she won renown for her strong technique, breadth of movement and versatile dramatic ability.

Her repertoire spanned both classical and contemporary works, including all the major full-length ballerina roles and a range of leading roles in shorter works. She continued working with the NBC beyond her retirement as a ballerina

Rudolf Nureyev, the great Soviet-trained dancer who had staged The Sleeping Beauty for the company in 1972, took a special interest in Kain and Augustyn.

1.  Karen Kain was National Ballet of Canada鈥檚 Youngest Principal Dancer

Flawless: Kain鈥檚 rise to stardom was meteoric. In 1970, at 19, she became the nation鈥檚 youngest principal dancer.

As a principal dancer, she performed central roles in a wide array of ballets, eventually becoming well known in Canada, with the help of legendary dancer Rudolf Nureyev.

Three years later, she and company colleague Frank Augustyn won the prize for best pas de deux.

She also won the silver medal as best ballerina at the Moscow International Ballet Festival.

By that time, she was already a favourite partner of Soviet-born superstar Rudolf Nureyev.

Since then, she has continued to dazzle audiences around the world with her flawless technique, sensitivity to music and dramatic intensity.

But, despite many offers to join other companies, she has stayed in Canada.

2. Karen Kain鈥檚 Mother is the one who Enrolled her in Ballet

Early Life and Education Karen Kain was born in 1951 in Hamilton, Ontario, the oldest of four children.

Kain’s mother enrolled her daughter in ballet training because she believed it would improve her postural alignment, poise, and discipline.

The family moved from Ancaster to Erindale Woodlands, Toronto Township when Kain was in grade 6 (age 11, 1962) so she could begin training at the National Ballet School of Canada. (The majority of Toronto Township, including Erindale Woodlands, is now Mississauga.)

 Betty Oliphant was the head of the  National Ballet School of Canada at the time. Kain attended the school on a partial scholarship.

She joined the National Ballet of Canada upon graduating in 1969. She also participated in Girl Guides of Canada programs as a member.

It was in recognition of her unparalleled legacy and ongoing relationship with the company.

On June 30, 2021, Karen Kain stepped down as Artistic Director after a brilliant career with The National Ballet of Canada.

She first joined the company as a member of the Corps de Ballet.

She became Principal Dancer in 1971.  Following a sensational debut as Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, she quickly achieved international fame as one of the great classical dancers of her era.

Karen is the longest-serving Artistic Director since Founder Celia Franca and a Canadian dance icon of global influence.

5. Karen Kain is a Leader in Philanthropy

Karen Kain has worked in a voluntary capacity for a variety of charitable organizations and public institutions.

They include the Kidney Foundation, the Toronto Humane Society and Foster Parents Plan Canada.

Notably, she is the founding president of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre. It helps dancers plan for and accomplish a smooth transition from stage performance to a new career.

Kain acted as chair of the board of the Canada Council for the Arts from 2004 to 2008.

The Karen Kain School of the Arts, so named by Toronto elementary school children to honour her career-long contributions to the arts, opened in 2008 in Etobicoke, Ontario.

6. Karen Kain鈥檚 performing career lasted well beyond the norm for ballerinas

 

Her dancing beyond age 40 blossomed into new dimensions of creativity, dramatic complexity and emotional depth.

Nevertheless, in 1996, she announced her intention to retire as a full-time principal dancer with the company.

This prompted Garth Drabinsky to produce a cross-Canada farewell tour in the summer and early fall of 1997.

Kain continued to dance for another year, frequently with the senior company of Nederlands Dans Theater, and in a variety of galas.

Kain and Ross Petty are married.

He is best known for his eponymous production company, which stages what is promoted as “family musical” theatre productions in the British pantomime tradition in Toronto every holiday season.

Since 1996, Ross Petty Productions have been producing what they call 鈥淔ractured Fairy Tale Musicals鈥� at Toronto鈥檚 Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre.

Petty had previously been involved since the early 1980s with pantomimes staged at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.

British producer Paul Elliott imported traditional English pantos using a largely British cast with a few token Canadian actors.

Petty began appearing in the shows in 1983 and became co-producer with Elliott in 1986 before launching his own version of the tradition a decade later.

10. Karen Kain鈥檚 is a large part of Canadian History of Dance

 

In 1971, Ms. Kain was awarded the Silver Medal in the Women鈥檚 Category at the prestigious International Ballet Competition in Moscow.

She and her frequent partner, Frank Augustyn, received a special prize for Best Pas de Deux.

Kain then embarked on a remarkable international career during which she performed many of ballet鈥檚 greatest roles with such companies as Paris Op茅ra Ballet and Roland Petit鈥檚 Le Ballet de Marseilles.

Then came Bolshoi Ballet, London Festival Ballet and Vienna State Opera Ballet.

Kain retired from dancing following a farewell tour in 1997 and took up the position of Artist-in-Residence with The National Ballet of Canada.
