Lunenburg is a port town on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada founded in 1573. It was named in 1753 after the Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg who became King George II of Great Britain. The town was one of the first British attempts to settle protestants( Christians who rejected the Catholic Church doctrine of papal Supremacy) in Nova Scotia.

It is a natural harbor on the Western side of Mahone Bay, about 100km southwest of Downtown Halifax. In the article are the top ten fascinating facts about Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

1. It retains its original layout and appearance

Lunenburg port town retains its appearance as in the 1800s. UNESCO considers it the best example of a planned British Colonial settlement in North America. Its local wooden vernacular architecture( Buildings done outside any academic tradition, and without professional guidance in the pre-industrial societies), is also retained in the town. 

2. The town is built on rock deposits

The area is largely built on Cambrian deposits from the first geological period of the Paleozoic Era to Ordovician sedimentary deposits. The Ordovician period is second to the Cambrian of the six periods of the Paleozoic Era. 

The last glacial period simply the ice age period transformed the landscape. Glaciers eroded and plucked at the bedrock during their advances across the country, creating various deposits that vary in thickness. Drumlins are one of the deposits which dominate the landscape of Lunenburg. 

3. The climate of the town is moderate

Lunenburg’s geographical location which is along the Atlantic coastline, helps it limit the extreme temperatures. It is slightly milder during winter and slightly cooler during summer. The summers and winters in the region are different than other regions with similar latitudes.

Lunenburg enjoys warm, breezy summers with low temperatures of about 20° C. Winters are cold and frequently wet, and heavy winter snowfall can occur but is usually short-lived because of frequent winter rains and regular freeze-thaw cycles. There is also seasonal lag due to oceanic temperatures hence spring seasons are always experienced late in the season.

4. Lunenburg is a municipality in Nova Scotia

The government n Nova Scotia has only two tiers; provincial and municipal. The province is the largest. The province consists of 50 municipalities whereby Lunenburg is one of the municipalities.

 The town isis also within Lunenburg county but Lunenburg does not have a government of its own. In the 1860s Lunenburg though was used for court sessions as its main purpose it was built.

5. It is home to Canada’s largest secondary fish-processing plant

High Liner Foods which is located in Lunenburg, is among the economic key factors that have led to an increment in job creation among its people. Also, taxes paid by the company are used to grow other sectors of the economy and also maintain the already set up structures in the town.

6. Lunenburg has attracted the film industry

The architecture and the visually attractive buildings in Lunenburg make the location suitable for filming. Some scenes of movies like Cloudburst have been filmed there, for instance, the dramatic and climactic wedding scenes of the movie were shot there. Cloudburst won Atlantic Canada Award for the best screenplay because of its wisely chosen scenes in the respective areas like Lunenburg.

 Other movies filmed in Lunenburg include The Covenant, Dolores Claiborne, Hanamizuki, the television show Haven, The Disappeared, and the series Locke & Key.

7. Lunenburg is largely inhabited by protestants

The town is one of the first British attempts to settle protestants and so basically, it was meant for protestants only. Protestantism is a form of Christianity that originated during the 16th century Reformation. The Reformation is a movement against what its followers perceived as errors in the Catholic Church.

Protestants although disagree with the Catholic doctrine of papal supremacy, they also disagree among themselves regarding the number of sacraments, the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and matters of ecclesiastical polity and apostolic succession.

Protestants are the majority in the area because the British government settled them there intentionally so as to counter the presence of French and Catholic dominance in Nova Scotia. The protestants are recruits from southwestern Germany and the Montbéliard district of France and Switzerland. Today most of them are English-speaking protestants.

8. Lunenburg has numerous historic buildings

Lunenburg is full of historic buildings built in ancient times. Examples of historic buildings in Lunenburg are The Lunenburg Academy which was opened in 1895, Saint John Anglican church built in 1753, The Bluenose II built in 1921, and Knaut-Rhuland House which was built in 1793.

9. Lunenburg was affected by the America revolution

Lunenburg was involved in the American Revolution, an ideological and political revolution that occurred in British America Between 1765 and 1791. The Raid on Lunenberg which is also called the Sack of Lunenburg occurred in 1782, when the US privateer, Captain Noah Stoddard of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, and other privateer vessels attacked the British settlement at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

Lunenburg though was defeated by 170  US privateers capturing militia leaders Colonel John Creighton and Major Dettlieb Cristopher Jessen. The prisoners of war though were later released from Boston without paying any ransom.

10. Lunenburg is named after a person

Lunenburg obtained its actual name today in 1753. It is named after the Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg.  The Duke later became King George II of Great Britain. The Acadian inhabitants of the site had called it Mirliguèche, a French spelling of a Mi’kmaq name.
