Alexander Graham Bell Museum is a national historic site designated in 1952. It is a 25-acre property in Baddeck, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. It overlooks the Bras d’Or Lakes, an irregular estuary with fresh water in the centre of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada.

1. The Historic site was not built by Graham Bell

Some people may anticipate that the Museum was built by Alexander Graham Bell. Actually, the building was built by Canadian government architect O. Howard Leicester. Some of the activities that visitors are assigned to while in the historic site are for example the kite workshop where visitors are given the necessary materials to make kites, hiking for 6 days on Cape Breton Highlands, and festivals and events.

6. The Bell Family Album is stored in the Museum

The album is part of the commemorations of Alexander Graham Bell. His family gave the pictures to the Museum. The album holds many photographs from Bell’s life.

The individual photographs are displayed on a screen. When visitors visit the museum the guide presents each photograph according to the events and the year they happened in order to give a glimpse of Bell’s life.

7. The Museum contains the HD-4 hydrofoil project

The original hull of a hydrofoil boat, the HD-4, set the marine speed record in Baddeck. It reached a speed of over 112 km/h. The project enhanced the development of the AEA Silver Dart which in 1909 J.A.D. MacCurdy piloted up into the air over the ice of Baddeck Bay to become the first controlled heavier-than-air craft to be flown in the British empire.

Osborne Howard Leicester is credited for the attractive two-story structure building. It has an A-frame structure that features a large column-free interior space that perfectly accommodates the collections from Graham Bell. 

The large 1977 addition enhanced the functionality of the building by addressing curatorial concerns through the provision of an environmentally controlled environment for artifacts. The modern design has a rustic character created by the not laid, rock-faced sandstone exterior walls which are colored, laminated wood beams on the roof, and the redwood fittings and furnishings.

The compound and the building adhere to their architectural values, environmental significance, and historical associations. The compound to be precise is well maintained with well-mowed grass, beautiful flower beds, and paths are well maintained by tarmacking and lighting systems well installed.
