1. Revelstoke Railway Museum was built in 1993

The Revelstoke Railway Museum has a deep history with the railway that was founded by the Selkirk Division of the CRHA.

The Revelstoke Heritage Society was formed in 1988 with the dream of bringing railway history back to Revelstoke town which is one of Canada’s oldest railway towns.

Its major project the construction of the Revelstoke Museum was developed in 1993, a grass-roots project driven by community leaders and which got support from Revelstoke citizens, businesses, and the public sector. It was opened to the public in 1993.

2. It was designed by Architect Paul Hudges

The museum was built by local craftsmen using locally sourced timber sawn at local mills and was designed by  Architect Paul Hudges.

Hudges was a passionate qualified architect who had much experience including the development of strategic master plans.

The remodeling of existing buildings, and the delivery of significant new build projects from inception through completion. The Revelstoke Museum is recognized as one of the best small railway museums in Canada.

5. Revelstoke Railway Museum is a tourist destination

The museum is home to a wide collection of artifacts featuring indoor and outdoor exhibits with old train cars, engines, and antiques. It has a park with large green spaces and a picnic area.

The museum also contains a huge and majestic 5468 steam locomotive, one of the CPRs largest, and a diesel simulator using a real locomotive control stand.

It also contains a store inclusive of a gift shop, books, clothing, and other goods like toys among other goods.

The museum is said to have a very friendly staff that has delighted over 500,000 visitors since opening in 1993.

6. The Railway Museum holds a huge model railway featuring the Railway Model Club

The Revelstoke Model Railway Club was initially an informal group of modelers which became a formal group in 1996 where they talked about building a club layout.

In about 2000, the decision was made to construct the layout which was designed to be portable so that it could be set up at the model railway meets around British Columbia.

In 2006, the Revelstoke Railway Museum invited the club to set up the layout on the mezzanine floor at the railway museum where it is found to date.

7. The Railway Museum displays a huge Steam Locomotive cp5468 one of CPRs largest

CPR 5468 represents a high-pressure oil-fired heavy load locomotive. It is one of the last class built new for a Canadian railway.

The steam locomotive is on display at the Revelstoke Railway Museum, where it’s under lease to the Selkirk Division of the CRHA, Revelstoke, British Columbia. It has been in the museum since 1992.

8. Revelstoke Railway Museum houses a CPR Diesel locomotive SD5500

The railway was powered by steam until the arrival of diesel power in the 1950s which was put into service in Revelstoke.

CPR 5500 was the first SD-40 model locomotive produced by General Motors Diesel Division in London. Ontario for North America and delivered to the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1965.

The Revelstoke Heritage Railway Society sincerely thanks the innovative Canadian Pacific for generously donating CPR5500 to the Revelstoke Railway Museum.

9. The Railway Museum is nearby The Last Spike 50km on Highway

The Last Spike was the final and ceremonial railway spike driven into the Canadian Pacific Railway by CPR railroad financier Donald Smith.

It marked the end of a saga of natural disasters and financial crises. It signals the completion of CPR and remains a symbol of national unity in Canada.
