The rich trove of antiquarian legal tomes discovered during the renovation of the Loop building from the turn of the century inspired the name of Vol. 39. These books are now employed as decorative highlights in a bar that has tufted leather couches and a color scheme of cognac and charcoal, giving the impression of a smoking lounge from the 1940s.

Head bartender Jess Lambert designs cocktails with a retro feel by consulting a collection of rare spirits. Her specialty cocktail, the Old Fashioned, is offered in several iterations. The Vol. 39 Vintage Old Fashioned combines hand-carved ice, 30-year-old Armagnac, Demerara sugar that has been aged in barrels, Angostura, and orange bitters. This is one the cocktail that you should try.
