10 Things to Know About The Louvre Pyramid Architect


 

I.M. Pei Chinese-American was the architect of the Louvre Pyramid a large glass and metal structure. The pyramid is located in the main courtyard of the Louvre Palace in Paris and is surrounded by other three small pyramids.

Pei was selected as the architect of the pyramid in 1983. Its structure is built using glasses segments and metal poles. Its construction was completed in 1988 as part of the broader Grand Louvre project.

Other buildings he has designed include the John Hancock Tower, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Johnson Museum of Art, the Indiana University Art Museum, the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, and the Grand Louvre & Louvre Pyramid among others.

1. His Mother Died When he Was only 13 years

Pei was so close to her mother. She even only invited Pei to join her on meditation retreats but not other kids. The architect was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong, Republic of China, however, his family moved to Hong Kong a year later after he was born.

When I.M. was only 10 years old his father secured a job promotion and relocated with his family to Shanghai. Not long after they moved to Shanghai, Pei鈥檚 mother was dragonized with cancer. His mother passed away after he turned 13 years old.

2. Pei and his Siblings were Raised by an Extended Family

Pei鈥檚 father secured a job promotion when Pei was 10 years old. The family has to relocate from Hong Kong to Shanghai. Not so long after they relocated I.M.鈥檚 mother developed cancer. She later died after Pei turned 13 years.

Due to their mother鈥檚 death, Pei and his siblings were sent to live with extended family where they were raised since their father was more consumed by his work. Pei said, 鈥淢y father began living his own separate life pretty soon after that.鈥

3. Pei Met with her Wife in New York City

Back in the 1930s, when I.M. Pei was visiting New York City he met a Wellesley College, (a private women鈥檚 liberal arts college in Wellesley, Massachusetts, United States) student known as Eileen Loo. They fall in love and started dating and in 1942, the couple married.

Loo joined the landscape architecture program at Harvard University while her husband Pei was introduced to members of the Faculty at Harvard鈥檚 Graduate School of Design.

The couple was blessed with a son in 1945 known as T鈥檌ng Chung and Eileen was forced to withdraw from the landscape architecture program to take care of their son.

4. He was Recruited by William Zeckendorf a Real Estate Developer

One of the interesting things to know about Pei is that he was employed by William Zeckendorf, who was a prominent American real estate developer.

He started working for William back in 1948. Pei worked for the New York City real estate magnate Zeckendorf for good seven years before he founded his own design firm in 1955.

5. He Established a Design Firm, I.M. Pei & Associates

It is interesting to know that the Louvre Pyramid architect founded his independent design firm known as I.M. Pei & Partners in 1955. The firm dealt with architectural works.

In 1966, the firm changed its name to I.M. Pei & Partners and later it was renamed Pei Cobb Freed & Partners in 1989. In 1990 Pei retired from full-time practice.

6. I.M Pei Worked as an Architectural Consultant

After Pei retired from full-time practice in architecture, he started working as an architectural consultant primarily in his son鈥檚 architectural firm known as Pei Partnership Architects.

Pei Partnership Architects in New York is an international architecture firm, co-founded by the sons of architect I.M. Pei, Li Chung Pei, and Chien Chung Pei in 1992.

7. He Worked with Several Prominent Architects

Before Pei started his own firm and became independent, he worked for several famous architects. One of the architects he worked for is Marcel Breuer, he worked for Marcel from 1940 to 1941 in his firm located in New York.

He also worked for William Zeckendorf, a real estate developer in New York City for a good seven years from 1948, and he left to develop his design firm.

8. Ieoh has Designed Several Buildings

Throughout I.M. Pei鈥檚 architectural journey, he designed several houses. Louvre Pyramid was one of his designs. He came up with the design back in 1983 and it was completed in 1988. The pyramid serves as the main entrance to the Louvre Museum.

Other buildings he has designed include John F. Kennedy Library, National Gallery of Art East Building, Bank of China Tower, Hong Kong, Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, Indiana University Art Museum, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, John Hancock Tower, and Roosevelt Field among others.

9. Pei Won Several Prizes and Awards

leoh has won several prizes and awards throughout his architectural journey due to the amazing work he was doing. His design Louvre Pyramid in Paris won an AIA twenty-five Year award back in 2017 for the recognition of architectural designs.

Other awards architect Pei won include the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003, from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, the Pritzker Prize in 1983, the Royal Gold Medal, and the Medal of Freedom among others.

10. He is a Learned Architect

When the architect of the Louvre Pyramid Architect finished his secondary education, he decided to join university. He was qualified and invited to several schools but decided to join the University of Pennsylvania in 1935, a private Ivy League research university in Philadelphia.

 He did not stay for long in Philadelphia and transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. However, even after transferring, he did not like the school as well since both schools focused on Beaux-Arts architecture. While in school he spent most of his free time researching emerging architects like Le Corbusier.

He started working for the National Defense Research Committee during World War II, after suspending his work at Harvard, which coordinated scientific research into U.S. weapons technology.
