Top 10 Amazing Facts about Dragon Tiger Tower


 

The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas is a temple on Lotus Lake in Kaohsiung’s Zuoying District. The temple was constructed in 1976. The Tiger Tower is one of the towers, and the Dragon Tower is the other. 

The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are one of the unique locations to visit in Kaohsiung. The most notable feature of this location is its entrance and exit concept, which is reminiscent of a tiger’s mouth and a dragon’s throat. This structure’s symbolic meaning is turning back bad fortune and entering into a good one.

Yellow walls, red pillars, and orange tiles adorn the seven-story tower. A bridge connects the front to the shore. Inside the temple, there are paintings of Ksitigarbha. The Tiger Tower contains paintings of the twelve Magi, the Jade Emperor’s thirty palaces, and Confucius. The towers have two spiral staircases, one for ascending and one for descending visitors.

This structure exemplifies traditional Kaohsiung culture. The Small Tortoise Mountains, Spring and Autumn Pavilions, 5-mile Pavilion, and Pei Chi Pavilion, as well as a surrounding lake, overlook the towers.

The dragon represents auspicious power and strength in Chinese culture. Where they have control over water, including rain and floods, dragons were frequently used as symbols by Chinese emperors. Dragon is also one of the twelve Chinese zodiac signs.

Some Chinese believe that those born in the Year of the Dragon are smarter and more fortunate than others. Emperors in ancient China used the dragon as a symbol, and you can see it on their imperial robes, which were also known as “dragon robes.”

2. The tiger represents prowess

The tiger, on the other hand, represents prowess, righteousness, and harmony. According to the Chinese, it is the king of all animals, which is also represented by a zodiac sign.

Dragons and tigers are revered in Chinese culture. They represent the various powers of nature and combine to form Yin (tiger) and Yang (dragon). The dragon represents the east and spring, while the tiger represents the west and autumn. 

It is always recommended that visitors enter through the dragon’s mouth and exit through the tiger’s mouth in order to get rid of bad luck and turn it into good.

The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are part of the temple Cihji Palace, which is directly across the street. Cihji Palace is home to Baosheng Dadi, one of the area’s patron saints, along with other deities. The first Cihji Palace was constructed in the 17th century.

During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, the temple was converted into a military base. The patron saints were temporarily relocated to other locations. The current temple’s construction was not completed until 1959.

Baosheng Dadi directed the construction of the Dragon Tiger Pagodas in 1974. In 1976, the two seven-story pagodas were completed.

6. There are paintings inside both towers

Paintings depicting various Buddhist and Daoist (Taoist) characters and stories can be found inside the “body” of both the dragon and the tiger. Inside the pagodas, there are also paintings. They were quite narrow and steep, so you had to be extremely cautious. The Dragon Pagoda has many dragon decorations.

You can walk to the Tiger Pagoda from the first floor of the Dragon Pagoda. This pagoda was similar to the previous one, except it was decorated with tigers. The “Five Mile Pavilion” can be seen from the Dragon Pagoda. A mythical creature perched alone on the eave.

7. There is a zigzag bridge

To reach the twin pagodas, a bridge zigzags across the Lotus Pond.

8. Entrance is free

Visit the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. There is no fee charged at the entry point. Remember to take lots of photos!

There were no lotus flowers in the pond because it was winter. Instead, it was covered in lily pads. I wish I had come during the summer when the lotus flowers were in bloom. The view would have been spectacular.

9. Dragon and Tiger Pagodas is the most popular temple at Lotus Pond

The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, are without a doubt the most popular temple at Lotus Pond in Kaohsiung and possibly one of the best temples in Taiwan.  The image of the pagodas in saturated colors reflects on the pond as the sun shines. Visitors have always stopped to photograph the reflection.

The Lotus Pond, only 5 kilometers from the city center. It is a landmark of this city (the second largest on the island). The Lotus Pond is a man-made lake 1.5 kilometers long and 500 meters wide, surrounded by temples and pagodas. You’ll feel like you’re in Asia in this area.

There is a Free Walking Tour of Kaohsiung Lotus Pond.  You can visit Lotus Pond on your own and see all of these temples and statues, or you can join a free walking tour with, . This tour is offered every Thursday and Sunday at 3:00 p.m., beginning at the Dragon and Tiger Pagoda and ending at 5:30 p.m.

10. Commuting to Dragon Tiger Tower is easy

The Dragon Tiger Tower is actually quite easy to reach, thanks to Kaohsiung’s excellent public transportation system. Those who are already on the Red 35 bus line can take it straight to Lotus Pond.

Those who do not have that option or who live near an MRT station can take the MRT red line train to Zuoying Station. Take the Red 35 bus to Lotus Pond from Zuoying MRT station. The bus fare is 12 NTD (approximately 0.30 USD), but the MRT fare varies depending on your travel distance. Or simply request for an Uber!
