Ximending, nicknamed “Harajuku of Taipei” and the “Shibuya of Taipei” is a popular tourist destination in Taiwan. It is located in the northeastern part of Wanhua District in Taipei.

The area was established during the Japanese rule, and it is named referring to an area outside the west gate of the city. Since then the area has developed into a leading commercial and cultural hub on the island of Taiwan.

Ximending attracts an average of over 3 million shoppers per month, as it boasts of a variety of vibrant restaurants, bars, shops, and legendary Taiwan historical sites.

The area has over twenty theatres, and six thousand vendors, and is a popular area for small concerts, album launches, and street performances. All these activities turn the area into a magnet attracting a large population of young people living in and around the area.

Ximending is particularly very busy and full of young people during the weekends and public holidays. It also attracts bigger crowds in the evening, after young people come off their work and school classes.

2. Ximending is Gay Community Paradise

Ximending area is very popular for visitors with an interest in Taiwanese history and heritage. Several historical sites built during the Japanese rule era are found in the area.

One of them is the Ximending Mazu temple. It sits in an obscure and almost hidden location in the bustling Ximending shopping district. The name Mazu refers to a heavenly queen, who is an extremely popular deity in Taiwan.

The Red House Theater is another prominent building from the Japanese era. It was built in 1908 as a market building with its ground floor serving as a departmental store.

Ximending became a popular theatre street in Taipei in the 1930s, its growth accelerated after the end of World War 2. In the 1950s more theatres mushroomed in the area, which attracted thousands of theatre audiences and every theatre was full to capacity.

However, in the 1990s, the booming business in the area started to dwindle after the city of Taipei started to develop towards eastwards. This changed after the government established Ximending as a pedestrian area, and the business started to thrive again.

Today Ximending has over twenty theatres and other areas for small concerts and street performances it is also the home to the legendary red house theatre.

The government of Taiwan has reserved areas strictly dedicated to street performers and entertainers. Ximending is one of the busiest areas with street activities with performances happening every day and night.

The place never runs out of performers, instead, they queue up one after the other, to show what they have got to the crowd.   They include vocalists, acrobats, jugglers, and hypnotizers.

Street shows are absolutely free, but the audience sometimes donates some cash as a gesture of appreciation and encouragement to the artists.

8. The Red House Theatre is Located Here

Constructed in 1908, the red house theatre is a major landmark of Ximending on Chendou road with a long history in performing arts.

It is a 2-story octagonal building comprised of red tiles and bricks, on the inside the roof is an ingenious piece of architecture with a shape of an umbrella.

The ground floor houses a small cafe and a display of the history of the building, as well as several independent shops. The second-floor theatre hosts regular live performances. The red house theatre is a popular destination for local and international tourists.

 For travelers coming from other cities, they may simply take a flight or Taiwan high-speed train to Taipei’s main station and then take a short ride or 10 minutes short walk to the Ximending area.
