Paramount+ scores a perfect 10 out of 10 with its brilliant A Gentleman in Moscow, starring the wonderfully talented Ewan McGregor. In his role as Count Alexander Rostov, the unrepentant aristocrat sentenced to life imprisonment under house arrest in the grand Metropol Hotel by the Bolsheviks, he is at once witty, cunning, charming, deceitful, industrious and charming.

It is hard to imagine that the thread woven through these captivating eight episodes is based in quasi-reality of how some of the aristocrats were treated during the decades that followed the revolution. This series is rife with wonderfully crafted supporting characterizations so ably portrayed by a talented cast.

Truly outstanding among them are Johnny Harris as the Count’s menacing and malevolent handler Osip and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Anna Urbanova an actress desperately using her wiles to secure a prominent place in Russian cinema while carrying on a steamy affair with the Count. (note she is McGregor’s wife in real life)

Beautiful cinematography, exquisite production design. A wonderful experience to enjoy. Pour yourself a Moscow Mule, sit back and revel in its story.
