Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction interpretation of Percival Everett’s novel “Erasure” is a brilliant study of how to deftly bring a storyline to life with a subtle and even-handed approach.

He masterfully develops this story of inherent hypocrisy within the publishing arena while balancing a myriad of subplots and characters. Jeffrey Wright absolutely shines as the main character, filling his performance with both pathos and joy.  He is ever so ably supported by an extraordinarily talented cast of actors.

Even though her screen time is brief, Tracee Ellis Ross shines brightly. Erika Alexander and Issa Rae create bedrock characters that give Wright the foundation on which to perform his magic. Sterling K. Brown creates a character you will love and hate and delivers on all levels and is truly worthy of his Oscar nomination. Last, and I must say, who knew she was still alive, Leslie Uggams also delivers with her poignant portrayal of the mother we all hope we never have to deal with.

Top-notch cast at every level. 5 stars.

Get off your butts and make an effort to see this wonderful film.
