The new Eddie Murphy vehicle is at best, caught somewhere between a movie for kids (so NOT) and a weak attempt at a humorous adult-focused film (lots of subtle societal references/attempts at humor that no one under the age of 21 would get).

That being said, it is a step up from all the saccharine holiday fare from Hallmark and thank our lucky stars for that. Brief overview: neighborhood competition to win the Best Holiday Decorations prize thwarted by a mischievous elf and all the ensuing machinations toward this goal.

IMHO if this film is any indication, our dear Eddie Murphy as the obsessed competitor, has reached a new low point in his career choices. Relies mostly on his tried and true schtick which was only average at best. Tracee Ellis Ross’ true comedic talents were vastly overshadowed by the mundane script. The one and only standout in this 2 1/2 star movie was Jillian Bell as the malevolent elf. A wonderful characterization that totally nailed it.

See it? Maybe. At least it’s free on streaming.
