Netflix’s new series, Painkiller, sheds a brilliant spotlight on the opioid crisis and the villains behind the proliferation of the infamous OxyContin pain relief drug. If only the ending of the multiple lawsuits brought against big pharma was not so unsatisfactory. Purdue Pharma’s claims for bankruptcy protection being banned by the US Supreme Court is, after so many years, a brilliant step in the right direction. And the Sackler family loses immunity? Oh boo hoo, they should have been in jail years ago for their heinous and knowing actions.

Matthew Broderick shines as Richard Sackler as he creates a brilliant characterization of a truly evil person hell bent for money with absolutely no moral compass.. In a rare example of where we have second generation Hollywood children actually living up to their parent’s talents, we have stand out performances by West Duchovny as one of the ill-informed pill pushers and Tyler Ritter as the US Attorney (you know who their parents are.) Let’s not overlook a wonderfully nuanced performance by Uzo Aduba as Edie Flowers the erstwhile champion of those addicted. This is a must watch and should motivate all of us to push for tougher legislation and penalties for those that knowingly push any addictive substances.
