5 Bridges you need to see in Copenhagen

Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, is on the coastal islands of Zealand and Amager. It’s connected to Malmo in southern Sweden by the Oresund Bridge.

The history of the city can be seen through its 18th-century rococo district where one can find the Frederiksstaden and the Amalienborg Palace that was once home to the royal family.

The Renaissance era is well represented too through the Rosenborg Castle and Christianborg Palace that have beautiful gardens.

There are beautiful canals in the city that have floating hot tubs. Other than the canals, you will most definitely notice the bridges over the canals and on highways too.

The most unique being Oresund bridge. Here are the top 5 bridges to see in Copenhagen.

1. Circle Bridge (Cirkelbroen)

Circle Bridge By Colin-Wikimedia

This pedestrian bridge was officially opened to the public in 2015. Copenhagen has a biking culture and the riders were made for a special bridge to ride to and from the Christianbro and Appelbys Plads with ease.

The bridge is made up of five circular platforms of different size each with its mast. These platforms birthed the bridge’s name.

What makes this bridge top our list is its architectural design that resembles a ship by the quay referencing the city’s shipping history. It is one of the newest beautiful landmarks in Copenhagen.

Cirkelbroen was designed by Danish-Islandic Olafur Eliasson an award-winning architect.

The bridge gives both pedestrians and cyclist time to slow down as they connect between the Christiansbro area to Appelbys Plads.

When in the Christiansbro area in Copenhagen, please check out this amazing bridge.

2. Oresund Bridge, Cable-stayed

The famous Oresund bridge is an 8-kilometre cable-stayed bridge that runs to an artificial island transitioning into a tunnel for another 4 km connecting Denmark to Sweden.

This award-winning double-track railway and motorway were opened in 2000. Between 2000-2009, it was the longest combination of a bridge and a railroad in Europe.

It was designed by architect George Routine and transit from either side takes approximately 40 minutes

One thing about this bridge since it connects two countries, one has to pay to cross, the toll booths are on the Swedish side.

The Oresund bridge links the rail and road networks of the Scandinavian Isthmus with the Central and Western Europe.

The bridge carries an under the sea data cable that allows internet transmission between Central Europe and Sweden.

3. Lille Langebro cycle and pedestrian bridge

This is another foot and cycling bridge that you need to see while in Copenhagen.

Lille Langebro bridge stretches for at least 160 metres across Copenhagen’s Inner harbour.

The architects and designers of this bridge were from an architectural firm known as WilkinsonEyre based in London. They won the bis through a competition hosted by Realdania and Byg.

Before this bridge was built, the area across the harbour was empty and deserted. The design of the bridge pays tribute to the history of the land by emulating the ramparts and moats of Christianshavn.

The bridge features a curled silhouette accentuated by the ribbon-like edges that resembling wings on either side.

It is divided into five spans that have two parts on either side that are 28-meters long. The Pedestrian section is approximately 3-metres wide and 4-metres wide for the cyclists. Both sections have two lanes to allow easy movement.

Since the bridge was built on a busy area of the harbour that experiences maritime traffic, it opens and closes up. this is the reason why its middle section is higher than the quaysides.

The bridge gets lit by spotlights at night that run alongside the entire length of the bridge.

4. Bryggebroen Bridge, Swingbridge

The third footbridge on our list is Bryggebroen which is a swing bridge. It is both a footbridge and a cycling bridge that links two other pedestrian bridges; Kalvebod bridge and Cykelslangen bridge to the west and Islands bridge to the east.

It is 190 metres long and is popular with couples that lock their love padlocks on the bridge rail and throw the keys into the water below for long-lasting relationship.

The 5-metre wide bridge has been divided into two lanes, one for cyclists and the other for pedestrians. It is another swing bridge that opens up to allow boats and other sailing vessels to pass through.

The Danish people were involved in naming this bridge, the name Bryggenbroen was selected from more than 200 entries. The name links both the Islands Brygge and Kalvebod Brygge.

This was the first bridge to be constructed over Copenhagen’s harbour in 50 years.

Bryggebroen bridge is located close to Fisketorvet shopping centre that’s on Kalvebod bridge and links up the Gemini Residence that’s on Island brygge.

This bridge was built in 2006 and got an extension in 2014. The new cycle bridge stretches from the bridge to the shopping centre. This also happens to be a shorter way for University students.

5. Marble Bridge

The last bridge that you need to see while in Copenhagen is the Marble Bridge. This bridge was designed by Nicolai Eigtved and was built at the same time as the Frederiksstaden palace. It was completed in 1744.

Marble bridge is a rococo style bridge that crosses over the Frederiksholms Kanal. It links the Ny Vestergade to Christiansborg Ridebane which is a square that is enclosed by old stables. These two areas of the palace survived a big fire in 1794.

The bridge is paved with Norwegian marble and that is how it got its name, the marble bridge.

This bridge has got to be in anyone’s bucket list because it is one of the most notable bridges in the city. The bridge is defined by beautiful arches and carvings on it.
