Czech music has its roots in sacred music dating back thousands of years. Czech music comprises musical traditions of the Czech lands of Bohemia, Moravia and Silensia, which have distinctive folk music.

Alongside traditional music is an established classical music which has burst out onto the international scene. There are a lot of heavy metal music lovers as well as electronic music.

Czech hit songs are usually in English, and the Republic is a great place to listen to all genres of music.

1. Antonin Dvorak

Anton铆n Dvo艡谩k, 1882 – Wikipedia

Antonin Leopold Dvorak was a Czech composer, born on 8th September 1841 best known for his use of the aspects of folk music of Moravia and Bohemia.

He was a native of Bohemia, and his style has been described as “the fullest recreation of a national idiom with that of the symphonic tradition, absorbing folk influences and finding effective ways of using them”.

Dvorak’s work made him one of the first Czech composers to achieve worldwide recognition. His career inspired the 1980 biographical film Concert at the End of Summer.

He was also a passionate train spotter. He was said to find much inspiration from them in his composition.

2. Leos Janacek

Leos Janacek was a Czech composer, folklorist, music theorist and teacher.

Janacek original plan was to study piano and organ, but he eventually committed himself to composition. He got inspiration from Moravian and Slavic music to create an original modern music style.

His early music was inspired by peers such as Antonin Dvorak, and as he progressed his career, he incorporated his studies of national folk music. Leos would also inspire later composers and music theorists.

Janacek is still one of the most respected Czech composers, despite his demise in 1928. Some of his works are still performed around the world.

3. Bedrich Smetana

Bedrich Smetana was a Czech composer, born on 2nd March 1824. He is best known for his 1866 opera, The Bartered Bride.

Smetana has been regarded as the “Father of Czech music”. He was a front-runner in developing a musical style that aligned closely with the people’s aspirations.

His career took a turn for the worst in 1874 when he went completely deaf and offered to resign from the theatre.

At the start of the next decade, Bedrich began experiencing depression, insomnia and a temporary loss of speech. He finally passed away in 1884 after his family couldn’t nurse him.

4. Karel Gott

Karel Gott was a Czech singer born on 14th July 1939. He is considered the most successful singer in Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic.

Gott decided to make music in 1960 and studied opera at the Prague conservatory. He released his first single in 1962 and has gone on to produce over 100 albums and 100 compilation albums.

He achieved significant success in German-speaking countries, where he sold over 23 million records in the estimated 50-100 million records sold worldwide. His popularity in German-speaking countries saw him win the Goldene Stimmgabel three times.

Gott was voted the best male singer in the annual Cesky Slavik (Czech Nightingale) national music award 42 times.

5. Karel Kryl

Karel Kryl was an iconic Czech poet, singer-songwriter and author.

His songs are highly poetic, with perfect rhyming and frequent historical allusions. Many of his songs were protest songs in which he attacked the Communist regime in his country. He attacked the stupidity, hypocrisy and inhumanity of the Communists.

Kryl lived for 20 years in forced exile. He spent most of his time working for Radio Free Europe and released some albums during that time. Though his songs were banned from government-controlled radio stations, they were still prevalent in his homeland.

He won some awards during his career, including the Jan Zahradnicek and the Czech Grammy.

6. Jan Hammer

Jan Hammer is a Czech-American musician, composer and record producer born on 17th April 1948. He is best known for his crime drama series, Miami Vice.

He had his first audience while playing keyboards with the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early 1970s. Hammer has composed and produced at least 14 original motion picture soundtracks. His compositions have seen him win several Grammy Awards.

Hammer has also collaborated with prominent jazz and rock musicians such as John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana and Stanley Clarke.

7. Mikolas Josef

Mikolas Josef is a Czech singer-songwriter and former model, born on 4th October 1995.

Josef burst into the music scene at 13 and released his debut single, “Hands Bloody“, in 2015. He was approached to represent his country in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2017 with the song “My Turn” but rejected the offer. Josef later confirmed to represent his country in the 2018 version of the awards with his song “Lie to me“.

He finished sixth in the competition, earning him the most successful entrant from the Czech Republic.

8. Iva Bittova

Born on 22nd July 1958, Iva Bittova is a Czech avant-garde, singer, violinist and composer.

Bittova was born to a musical family where her parents were musicians, but she started her career as an actor in the mid-1970s. She appeared in several Czech feature films, but later switched to singing and playing the violin in the early 80s.

She has released over eight solo albums, and her unique style gained her international recognition, which has helped her perform throughout Europe, the United States and Japan. In addition to her music career, She occasionally appears in feature films.

9. Marketa Irglova

Marketa Irglova is a Czech-Icelandic singer-songwriter, musician and actress born on 28th February 1988.

She is best known for starring in the film Once. The 2007 musical drama film earned her significant awards, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song with co-writer Glen Hansard for their song Falling slowly.

Irglova and Glen Hansard also have their band, The Swell Season, and they released an album in 2006.

Another collection of her awards is the Critics Choice Award in 2008 and Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award in 2008.

10. Gabriella Guncikova

Popularly known as Gabriela Gun, she is a Czech singer born on 27th June 1993.

Gabriela Gun rose to prominence in 2011 after she became a finalist in the second version of the Czech-Slovak version of Pop Idol and finished as the runner-up. She was later signed to Universal Music group and released her debut album, Dvoji tvar. Later, on she went on to win the Cesky Slavik awards for the New Artist Award in 2011.

In 2016, Guncikova represented her country at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “I Stand” in Stockholm, Sweeden. She became the first Czech to qualify for the grand final and finished in 25th place.
