The main cause of this situation is because of ice-albedo feedback. Ice-albedo is a situation where melting ice uncovers darker land, the darker land absorbs more sunlight which causes more heating.

Another cause of ice melting is the pollution from Europe which forms a dark layer on top of the ice which in return absorbs more sunlight. Furthermore, it’s melting due to the local winds which blow sand onto the ice, this causes the ice to melt faster.

In previous years, many research activities have been taking place on the Greenland Icecap. The Danish researchers have been drilling down into the ice cap to pull up core samples from the last 125,000 years.
