From receiving an Oscar for Best Actress, two Emmy Awards, the coveted Golden Globe, and winning a Grammy in the 1990s, Kate Winslet is certainly an English actress extraordinaire. She has participated in multiple film roles that majorly evolve around headstrong and complicated female characters.

Kate, also known as Elizabeth Winslet, was born on 5th October 1975 in Reading, England. Her family is of mixed descent with maternal Swedish ancestry and paternal Irish ancestry.

Surrounded by family members in showbiz, it was no surprise Winslet developed a liking for acting. Her father, siblings, and grandparents all grew their interest in the craft and practiced it professionally when they came of age.

Kate began participating in stage shows at her local theatre at the age of 5 before her screen debut in 1991. Since then, she has been featured in movies, series, and commercials and still continue to act to date.

Kate is also a musician with her hit single What If securing a position in the top 10 single on the UK music chart. She has several accolades to her name and has a net worth of $65 million. She has been in numerous magazines throughout her lifetime and was listed as Time magazine’s 100 most influential people twice (2009 and 2021).

In the fashion industry, Kate is the brand ambassador of Lancome and Longines. She is the brains behind the 2011 Lancome holiday season makeup collection and the 2017 exclusive and limited Longies watch design.

Winset has participated in various charity events namely Afghanistan Relief Organization and Pushing Envelope by the National Literacy Trust. She is the co-founder of an NGO known as the Golden Hat Foundation which was established in 2010 to aid people suffering from autism.

1. Kate’s Family Was Financially Unstable During Her Childhood

Kate’s early life in England was not all sunshine and rainbows. Her family struggled financially and would sometimes live on free meal benefits. Her mother, who worked as a waitress, and her father, who took on laboring jobs, needed extra support to help raise their family of six. The Actor’s Orphanage Charity Fund took up the task and stepped in to aid the family for the better part of Winslet’s childhood.

2. Her Body Weight Made It Strenuous For Kate To Growth Her Acting Career

During her schooling years, Kate was bullied because of her weight. Her schoolmates often picked on her calling her names. Despite this, she continued to act and at 11, she joined a theatre school in Maidenhead, England.

Kate took part in more than 20 stage productions including Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Peter Pan but she only played the lead role in the latter. Though her acting skills were commendable, she was denied the opportunity to lead characters because of her body weight.

In the early 2000s, Winslet had 2 libel cases against the international magazine Grazia and Daily Mail tabloid regarding her weight. Both media outlets had put out false information about her weight loss efforts through exercise and diet. Kate won both cases and received a public apology on the same.

3. Her Breakthrough In Film Industry Came In The Late 1900s

Kate’s most memorable role was in the epic Titanic (1997). She played the romantic interest of the main character Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) who would, later on in the film, be her saving grace from the capsized ship.

The film was a complete success and holds multiple records. Theatres in North America were overwhelmed by the turnout and the film easily became the number-one movie for 3 and a half months consecutively. A 3D adaptation of the film was done in 2012.  

12 years after starring in the film, Kate and Leonardo DiCaprio jointly participated in the fundraising for the last living survivor of the RMS Titanic, Millvina Dean. The funds, which amounted to 30,000 USD, were used to cater for her nursing home expenses. Dean died of pneumonia in May 2009 and her ashes were scattered where the Titanic had set sail.

4. Kate Was Mentally Disturbed After Taking Up A Murderer Role In A Psychological Drama Film

In 1994, Winslet landed a role in the drama film Heavenly Creature, one of her highest-grossing films. The movie was based on a true story and was shot in the actual murder scene in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was the adaptation of the Parker-Hulme murder case of 1954, a homicide committed by two teenage friends, Juliet Hulme and Pauline Parker.

Kate played Hulme, the friend who aided Parker in executing the premeditated murder of her mother at Victoria Park. To get into character, Kate interacted with Hulme’s friends, and read her trial transcripts and diaries for months on months. After filming, Kate found it difficult to detach herself from the character and was left traumatized by the ordeal.

5. She Learned To Play The Piano As Part Of A Movie Character

When Kate was given her role as Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility (1995), her character required more than just her acting skills. She needed to learn piano and Chinese martial arts, Tai Chi. Her role in the film earned her first Oscar nomination.

6. Kate’s Book Was Featured By The United Nations On The World Autism Awareness Day

Every 2nd of April, the world comes together to commemorate children and adults with ASD (autism spectrum disorder). In 2009, Kate narrated a documentary based on the life story of Keli Thorsteinsson, a child who had non-verbal autism. She drew inspiration from the film and teamed up with Keli’s mother to form an NGO, Golden Hat Foundation in 2010.

In 2011, Kate and the luxury beauty brand Lancome came up with a limited-edition make-up collection for the Golden Hat Foundation. She also designed an exclusive Longies timepiece collection for the same purpose.

In addition to this, Kate dedicated her book The Golden Hat: Talking Back To Autism (2012) to people suffering from ASD. The book, which has testimonials from celebrities and Kate herself, was featured by the UN during the 2012 World Autism Awareness Day.

7. Winslet Formed A British Anti-Cosmetic Surgery League In An Effort To Encourage Natural Ageing

Together with fellow actress Emma Thompson, Winslet formed the anti-cosmetic surgery league. In an interview with Vogue magazine, she spoke out against cosmetic trends such as botox and the use of silicone. Her view on such procedures stemmed from the unnecessary and unnatural pressure of eternal youthfulness that came with being a celebrity.

In 2005, Kate was listed among the most beautiful people by ±Ê±ð´Ç±è±ô±ð’s magazine. She is one of the few celebrities in Hollywood who chose not to conform to societal standards of beauty. She has been outspoken on such matters and empowers women to be accepting of their natural appearance. 

8. Winset Was Awarded The Commander of The Order of The British Empire

 

In 2012, Kate received the Most Excellent Order of The British Empire for her contribution to film, charity, and public services. She was given the award during the Birthday Honors event in the United Kingdom. She said receiving the honors from the Queen of Buckingham Palace overwhelmed her with joy.

Throughout her acting, Winslet picked up a unique skillset some becoming lifetime hobbies. In 2017 and 2018, Kate took part in filming the sequel Avatar: The Way of Water where she played an underwater creature making her learn freediving.

In the film, she held her breath for more than seven minutes beating the 6-minute record set by Tom Cruise. The science fiction film will be released in 2023.

10. Kate Has Been Married Thrice

Kate first got married in 1998 and had her first child in 2000. After her divorce, she wedded Sam Mendes, a famous British film director, and moved to New York City in 2003. The two separated in 2011 and soon after Winslet married her third husband, Edward Abel Smith. She moved back to England and resides in the Sussex countryside with her husband and two children.

 

Although Kate enjoys working on films, she prioritizes her family and ensures she spends equal, if not more, time with them than her job. Her latest work is the creative non-fiction film Eleven Days in May (2022) where she is the voice behind the narration.
