For Arsenal fans, this electric German forward is ‘the one that got away.’ Serge is a German professional football (soccer) player, currently playing for German giants FC Bayern Munch. He was born on 14th July 1995 in Stuttgart, Germany.

Gnabry has played for several European teams in his senior career including Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion, Werder Bremen, Hoffenheim, and now Bayern Munich. He is also a regular for Germany’s National team and part of Hansi Flick’s 26-Man squad headed to Qatar 2022.

Serge plays primarily as a winger, a prolific and electric one at that. His pace allows him to tear through the opponent’s defenses. His exceptional finishing has made him one of the most feared forwards in the sport. Below are some interesting facts about the German goal scorer.

1. Made Footballing Foundation in His Hometown

Gnabry was born in 1995 in Stuttgart in the state of Baden-Württemberg (shortened BW or BaWü). He is the son of an Ivorian father and a German mother.

One major characteristic of Gnabry’s style of play is his blistering pace. He had this pace in his youth too and could have gotten into athletics as a sprinter but chose football instead.

At the tender age of 12, Serge was snapped up by VfB Stuttgart’s academy where he began his football journey. At Stuttgart, he would play alongside many current German football stars since Stuttgart has a famed academy. These stars include Joshua Kimmich (Bayern teammate), Timo Werner (RB Leipzig), and Rani Khedira (Union Berlin).

2. Signed for Arsenal Football Club In 2010

Gnabry was a talented footballer and his performances at Stuttgart’s academy were beginning to get noticed. In 2010, English giants Arsenal FC came calling for Gnabry.

Arsenal and Stuttgart agreed on a fee of £100,000 for the then 15-year-old in 2010. Due to minor recruitment regulations, Serge had to wait until 2011 when he turned 16 to join Arsenal. He officially became an Arsenal player in the 2011-12 season and played for the U18s before promotion to the reserves.

He made his Premier League debut on 20th October 2012 in a 1-0 defeat to Norwich in the 2013-14 season. Gnabry was 17 years and 98 days old becoming Arsenal’s second-youngest player in the league’s history after Jack Wilshere.

3. Disappointing Loan at West Bromwich Albion

Gnabry’s stint at Arsenal was filled with ups and downs. He had an impressive 2013-14 season with some memorable performances. One of the best coming against Arsenal’s bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The season ended with a 2013 Golden Boy Award, an FA cup winner’s medal, and a new 5-year contract.

However, things started going wrong at Arsenal during the 2014–15 season. Serge spent most of the season out due to a severe knee injury. This led to him getting loaned out to Tony Pulis’ West Bromwich Albion.

On 7th August 2015, Gnabry joined West Brom to get regular first-team football. Sadly, he only made one league appearance for the club. This was his debut in a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea on 23rd August 2015.

According to Tony Pulis, he was “not at the required level” to play for West Brom. Talk about words aging like milk. Arsene Wenger recalled him from loan due to a lack of game time at West Brom. The disappointing (his last at Arsenal) season ended with one league appearance and two league appearances.

4. Top Scorer at the 2016 Olympics

The 2014-2016 seasons were two seasons that Gnabry would very much like to forget. From the injuries to the slating comments by Tony Pulis and his appearances.

However, the end of the 2015/16 season brought much-needed hope for Gnabry’s career. Up until then, he had been a constant in Germany’s youth squad so his callup was almost guaranteed. This is despite his horrendous 2015/16 season.

Gnabry was named in Germany’s squad for the 2016 squad. He did not disappoint by any measure as he rediscovered, he rediscovered his form in Rio de Janeiro.

He finished as the top scorer of the tournament, tied with future Bremen teammate Nils Petersen. Germany finished in second place after losing the final to Brazil.

5. Sold to Werder Bremen for £5 million

On 31st August 2016, Serge Gnabry said goodbye to Arsenal, or at least see you later as many fans hope. On this day he signed for Bundesliga’s Werder Bremen for £5 million.

Le Professeur (Arsene Wenger), claimed that he wanted to keep Gnabry at Arsenal but a lack of first-team opportunities made Serge want a move. Looking at the situation, it’s hard for one to blame Serge for not staying.

 Gnabry spent a single season at the club, the 2016-17 season. He made 27 league appearances and scored 11 goals and made 1 assist.

6. Snapped Up by Bayern After Impressing at Bremen

In recent years, FC Bayern Munich has built a reputation as bullies in the Bundesliga. This is not only in terms of performances as they have won the previous 10 league titles (as of 2022) but also because of their recruitment.

Bayern seems to sign the best talents from their rivals a reason many cite as a reason for their success. Players such as Lewandowski, Goretzka, Kimmich, Benjamin Pavard, and Manuel Neuer to name were all ‘poached’ from rivals.

Serge Gnabry is another huge talent to add to this list. On 11th June 2017, Gnabry signed for Bayern after shining for Werder Bremen. He initially signed a 3-year deal for €8 million.

7. Spent A Successful Season at Hoffenheim

Three days after signing for Bayern, it was announced that Gnabry would be joining another Bundesliga club, Hoffenheim, on a season-long loan. Reports suggest that the move was requested by Gnabry himself as he needed more experience to get into Bayern’s impressive starting 11.

Gnabry helped Hoffenheim secure a Champions League spot as they finished third in the Bundesliga. For his personal record, he scored 10 goals for the club in his 26 appearances in the season.

8. Serial Winner with Bayern Munich

On 2nd July 2018, Serge was presented to the Bavarians, Bayern fans, officially as a Bayern Munich player. As far as league titles go, Serge Gnabry has won every single one since he joined Bayern Munich. If the league table as of the 2022 World Cup break suggests anything of the final, then he is set to win another one.

Serge Gnabry also won the coveted ‘big ears’ Champions League trophy with Bayern in the 2019/20 season. In 2020, he took the No. 7 shirt which was previously worn by Fran Ribery. As far as club legends go, Ribery is up there with the best of them and Gnabry had big shoes to fill. So far, he has done a great job of the task.

9. Part of Germany’s 2022 Word Cup Squad

Okay, let’s be honest, there was no doubt whether Gnabry would be called up for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. It was just a matter of whether or not he would be fit to play.

The 2022 WC finals are quite unorthodox, being played in December bang in the middle of club leagues. This has ruled out many of our favorite players including Serge’s Germany teammate Timo Werner. However, lucky for us, Serge is fit, healthy, and on the plane to Qatar.

Having made his debut for Germany on 4th November 2016, Serge has been ever present name on Germany’s squad. He made 36 appearances, before the 2022 WC and scored 20 goals for the national side.

The Germany National team has had a rough time since winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. I guess the Champion’s curse still hasn’t left them. They must be paying for that unforgettable 7-1 humbling they handed the 2014 host nation Brazil.

However, Gnabry alongside other stars such as Manuel Neuer, Sane, and Musiala will be hoping to write their names in the history books.

10. Joined Common Goal in 2017

Common Goal is a project aiming to inspire everyone in football to collaborate toward an equal and sustainable future for all. In October 2017, Gnabry joined Common Goal. He was the second player in the Bundesliga after Mats Hummels to do so.

Common Goal members pledge to donate at least one percent of their wages to a collective fund managed by a non-governmental organization; StreetFootballWorld. Other members include; Paulo Dybala, Vivianne Miedema, and Adama Traore among many others.
