Most people know about Berlin and the Bundelsiga. Majority of them when they hear of Bavaria, know that it is a country situated in Europe but, never a state situated in German.

Here are 10 remarkable facts about Nuremberg city in Bavaria,  which is the 14th largest city in Germany.

1. The Nuremberg Castle

Within the Old Town are the historic buildings that dominate the skyline of the Old Town/Altstadt comprising the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg which is a tall fortification of a gigantic 351-meter-tall medieval fortress. It is one of the most gigantic medieval fortresses in the whole of Europe and was the home of all legitimate emperors and kings of German, who were rulers between 1050 and 1571. The castle lower end housed the imperial stables and was built in the year 1495 and has now been converted into a youth hostel.

The Pentagonal tower was built in 1040, while, the Sinwell Tower and the Kaiserburg were built in the 11th Century all offer a panoramic view of the city wall. While, at the Nuremburg be sure to visit the famous Deep Well, which is situated in the old-two story Well house structure erected in the year 1563.

2. The Notable City Walls

Most of the city circuit walls still stand to date as they were first built during the 11th Century.  The finest stretch of the preserved wall is situated on the West side of the Old Town, between Maxtor and Spittletor.

The wall between the Burg and the Old Town offers a spectacular view as you proceed to the medieval gateway which offers an inspiring yet firm feel and the sturdier medieval gateway of the Further Tor which is planted firmly against the passage of time at the Southern corner of the city.

3. The Deutsche Bahn and Transport Museum

The country’s massive railway models that are more than a century old are a wonderful attraction to explore, more the history of the country’s railroads. With the Deutsche Bahn (county’s railway) the DB Museum and the Museum of Communications, make up the superb Nuremberg Transport Museum. At the Museum be assured to find the perfectly restored steam and diesel fuel engines, seamlessly working replicas of Germany’s very first own operating trains as well as the distinguished royal coaches and trains.

 The museum boasts of the oldest interactive museum which traces its date to its first day of being open in 1899, being 123 years old. It offers one of the best tourist charter train ride experiences ever.

4. The Frauenkirche or “Church of our Lady”

The Roman Catholic church of Our Lady calls to your attention due to its dark ages Gothic architecture and rich structural design. The Church apart from being the city’s attraction site open her doors for mass, letting you trace back the liturgic ambiance back to 1352 staggering finish which is rich in detail as the seven Electors mechanical figures address by pacing around Emperor Charles Iv every day when the sun is high at noon.

5. Meeting the Painter House

A few meters away from the Nuremberg Castle is the well-renowned Rebirth German craftsman house, Albrecht Durer.  His lifetime achievements are his well artistic printed maps which occupy the five-story house built in 1420 that to date is used as a gallery for his lifetime’s work.  The artist and painter designed the south side Gothic Saalbau of the Nuremberg City Hall.

6. Let’s Convene at the Nuremberg City Hall

The city hall is situated just east of the Sebalduskirche Old town whose imposing Rennaissance building towers the skyline. Having been bombed during the Second World War, the structure was lessened by two windows axes on the Northern side. The architect Jacob Wolff the younger designed the City Hall to accommodate the council meetings from the houses of the clothiers.  

The city hall walls were decorated in 1825 and the hall itself has been built gradually with decorations of figurines found in the Bible in the book of Daniel, like the three Baroque portals by the sculptor Leonhard Kern and the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire of the  German Republic complete with the eagle.

7. St Sebaldus or the Hermit Missionary Church

The St. Sebald Church is one of the most important medieval churches along Our Lady’s Church and St. Lorenz. The church located in front of the old city hall borrowed its name from Sebaldus who was the patron saint, hermit, and missionary of Nuremberg.   The construction of the church started in 1225 and it took 50 years to complete its Gothic – Romanesque Renaissance style. Amongst its priceless treasures includes the stained glass windows, Veit Stoss works as well as the Shrine of St. Sebaldus.

Amongst its bizarre doctrines is the feature of a Judensau, which is an antisemitic sculpture of Jews performing and engaging in lewd acts with a pig hanging on its teats, as a third collects its excrement and a fourth feed it.

8. The Beautiful Fountain of Nuremberg

This beautiful Fountain /Schoner Brunnen was built by Heinrich Beheim in fin1385 and took 11 years to complete it. The height of the fountain is 19 meters high and is shaped like a Gothic Spire with 40 figures to represent the Roman Catholic view of the world in terms of Philosophy, Fine and Liberal Arts, the Prophets, the Prince-Electors the Worthies, and lastly the Evangelists and Church fathers.

It is believed that anyone who circles the two rings of brass on opposite sides of the fountain will be blessed and have good luck.

9. The Hauptmarkt Square

In the middle of the square at the middle of the Altstadt sits the daily markets and a favorite spot for cultural as well as popular events like the Nuremberg Flea Market, the famous Christmas mmarketiadditionto The Old Town Festival. This spot has been the center of commerce and it runs from Monday to Saturday.

10. Nuremberg zeppelinfeld

For the enthusiasts of racing vintage cars in Germany as can be seen in the 1930s pictures where fellow car enthusiasts enjoyed themselves, this is where to attend t relieve the car and adrenaline rush.  With cascading grey stairs overgrown with grass as seats, one does indeed feel the experience of the contrast between roaring cars and the passing wind and silence.
