Athens’ Olympic heritage is housed in a museum. The Athens Olympic Museum is a member of the International Olympic Museums Network and operates under the auspices of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The Museum’s goal is to emphasize the “Endeavor,” or the effort to outperform oneself in all aspects of life. The concept of the “Endeavor” inspired the Museum’s Permanent Exhibition design.

The permanent exhibition is divided into three major themes on three separate floors: Olympic World, Olympic Games, and Olympic Spirit

The Olympic World section of the exhibition begins on the third floor, where visitors learn about the history of the ancient Olympic Games and the nineteenth-century rebirth of the modern Games. Among the highlights are a display of Olympic torches and a video documenting major moments in the history of opening ceremonies.

The Olympic Games are commemorated on the second floor. The Youth Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games, as well as sporting equipment for a variety of sports, are introduced to visitors. Individual viewing stations have access to over 1,000 video clips of the Olympic Games and events

The Olympic Spirit is the permanent exhibit’s final section, where visitors are transported to an Olympic Village and can test their balance, agility, and mental skills through interactive exercises. There are also Olympic medals on display.

Over 40 global and national cultural institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the British Museum, the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection in Munich, and the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, collaborated with the Athens Olympic Museum. Many of the museum’s exhibit items were donated by Greek Olympic and Paralympic champions, who offered their medals and personal belongings to help enhance the visitor’s experience.

6. One can experience time travel at the museum

Ancient Olympia: Common Grounds is a temporary exhibition on tour. It encourages visitors to navigate and explore Ancient Olympia as it was over 2,000 years ago digitally. They can travel back in time to 173 A.D., explore the sights and digital monuments, and listen to the sounds of the Ancient Games to become a part of their history. Visitors can also ‘visit’ 3D versions of ancient Olympia’s historical monuments via desktops located in its hall.

The Caf茅 – Restaurant “1896” has opened within the premises of the Athens Olympic Museum, offering a fusion of Greek and Mediterranean flavors and a breathtaking view of the Athens Olympic Center “Spiros Louis” (O.A.K.A.)

The museum is easily accessible to people with limited mobility. At the Museum’s north entrance, there are two disabled parking spaces. Wheelchair users are welcome to use the Museum’s lifts and public areas. Mobility maps are available at the reception desk.
Hearing induction loops are installed in the multimedia elements of the permanent exhibitions for those who have hearing difficulties. The Museum also provides a portable hearing induction loop for the audio guides. Visitors with T-coil hearing aids are able to borrow a portable induction loop to use with the audio guide.

The Olympic Museum of Athens is now a part of a renovation project of the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens (OAKA), which was built in 2004 as the main Olympic park.
