1. Stanford University

Stanford University, officially known as Leland Stanford Junior University, is a private research university located in the census-designated place of Stanford, California, near the city of Palo Alto. Stanford is ranked among the top universities in the world.

Stanford was founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who had died of typhoid fever when he was only15 years old.

Stanford Law School employs more than 90 full-time and part-time faculty members and enrolls over 550 students who are working toward their Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree.

Also, the institution confers four advanced legal degrees. That is, a Master of Laws (LL.M.), a Master of Studies in Law (M.S.L.), a Master of the Science of Law (J.S.M.), and a Doctor of the Science of Law (J.S.D.).

Every fall, Stanford Law enrols a J.D. class of approximately 180 students, giving Stanford the smallest student body of any law school ranked in the top fourteen.

Stanford also maintains eleven full-time legal clinics, inclusive of the nation’s first and most active Supreme Court litigation clinic.

The University of Cambridge is a collegiate research university in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Founded in 1209 and granted a royal charter by Henry III in 1231, Cambridge is the world’s third-oldest surviving university.

The institution grew out of an association of scholars who left the University of Oxford after a dispute with the townspeople.

In addition, Cambridge is ranked among the most prestigious universities in the world and currently, it sits as the world’s second-best university, and the best in Europe, according to the QS World University Rankings.

Something unique about Cambridge is that it has won more Nobel Prizes than any other institution.

The study of law at the University of Cambridge began in the thirteenth century. The faculty sits the oldest law professorship in the English-speaking world, the Regius Professorship of Civil Law, which was founded by Henry VIII in 1540 with a stipend of £40 per year for which the holder is still chosen by The Crown.

Today, the faculty incorporates the Institute of Criminology as well as 11 Research Centres, including the world’s leading research institute for international law, The Lauterpacht Centre for International Law.

New York University (NYU) is a private research university in New York City. It was chartered in 1831 by the New York State Legislature and was founded by a group of New Yorkers led by then-Secretary of the Treasury, Albert Gallatin.

NYU has become the largest private university in the United States by enrollment, with a total of 51,848 enrolled students, including 26,733 undergraduate students and 25,115 graduate students, in 2019.

It receives the most applications of any private institution in the United States and admission is usually considered highly selective

Established in 1835, New York University school of law is the oldest law school in New York City and the oldest surviving law school in New York State.

4. University of Oxford

The University of Oxford is a collegiate research university in Oxford, England. There is evidence of teaching as early as 1096, thus making it the oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s second-oldest university in continuous operation.

It grew rapidly from 1167 when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris.

After disputes between students and Oxford townsfolk in 1209, some academics fled north-east to Cambridge where they established what became the University of Cambridge.

Along with its counterpart at Cambridge, the University of Oxford is unique in its use of personalised tutorials, where students are taught by faculty fellows in groups of one to three on a weekly basis, as the main form of instruction in its undergraduate and graduate courses.
