10 Things to know about Fashion Designer Thierry Mugler

Officially known as Manfred Thierry Mugler, Thierry was born on 21st December 1948 and unfortunately passed on 23rd January 2022 at the age of 73. He had many job descriptions among which included him being a French fashion designer, a creative director and a creative adviser of Mugler.

In the 70s, Mugler launched his magnanimous fashion house and quickly rose to prominence in the following decades for his kind of radical and rebellious architectural, hyperfeminine and theatrical approach to haute couture ( creation of custom-fitted high-end fashion design).

Mugler was actually one of the very first designers to champion diversity in his runway shows, which often tackled the issues of racism and ageism, and even incorporated non-traditional models such as drag queens, pornstars, and transgender women. No wonder his creations and ideas were best termed radical.

In 2002, he retired from the brand Mugler and returned in 2013 as the creative adviser. With that brief background information, let’s explore some of the things you may need to know about this great fashion icon.

1. Designed signature looks for the likes of Michael Jackson, Beyonce and other prominent celebrities

At the start of his career, Mugler designed signature looks for Michael Jackson, Madonna, Grace Jones, David Bowie and Diana Ross.

The most notable and iconic work of his is the dress Demi Moore appeared in, in the 1993 movie called Indecent Proposal. The dress ended up being termed “the most famous dress of the 1990s” and we really can’t blame the people who came up with that tag.

This black maxi dress with phenomenal details at the neckline was something that had not been seen before. Moore made a good job of looking good in it, but the dress itself was also a sight to behold.

In 1992 also, Thierry directed and designed the outfits for George Michael’s “Too Funky” music video.

Furthermore, Mugler’s fall 1995 haute couture collection, which marked the 20th anniversary of his brand, was staged at the Cirque d鈥橦iver venue in Paris. It has since been referred to as the “Woodstock of Fashion”, for having over 300 designed looks, an elaborate set design, dozens of high-profile supermodels and a performance from James Brown.

FYI: Woodstock was a music festival that was held in August between the  15th and 18th, of 1969, on Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in Bethel, New York, United States, 65 kilometres southwest of the town of Woodstock.

Moreover, he also designed costumes for fashion icons like Beyonce in her ‘I Am’  World Tour.

2. Was an owner of a perfume company

Thierry launched the perfume Angel, which ended up becoming one of the best-selling perfumes of the 20th century. It wasn’t the only perfume brand he came up with though.

In 2005, he launched Alien which also became a huge success. His scents can actually be found at major department and makeup stores including Macy鈥檚 and Sephora. So it shouldn’t be that hard to find if you end up digging them.

In 2006 again, Mugler completed a project for the launch of Tom Tykwer’s film, Perfume. In collaboration with the IFF company, Mugler was actually able to create a box set of fifteen compositions.

In 2007, while still following through the metamorphosis and transformation theme, Mugler launched Mirror, Mirror, a collection of five fragrances, created as ‘perfume-trickery’ meant to ‘enhance one’s presence.’

In 2010, the fragrance ‘Womanity’ was released by the House of Mugler.

Then in 2015, Mugler’s newest fragrance, Angel Muse, was released. His latest,  Angel Nova was released in June 2020.

Furthermore, on their company’s site, the president of Mugler Fashion and Fragrances summarized Thierry’s work as one that is genuinely dedicated to connecting both men and women with their emotions and providing them with addictive stories.

For them, it’s really all about developing genuine and authentic relationships with their clients by being able to offer personalized and unique services and experiences. They are limitless in their creation, always venturing into waters no one else has the guts to do. Their perfumes are meant to spice up the lives of men and women who use their products.

Wow! Even if you aren’t into perfumes, with such a description, you gotta be curious, right?

3. Mugler is the one who introduced Diana Ross to the world of runway

When you hear the name Diana Ross, what comes to mind is this very iconic musician that graced the industry in the 70s and 80s. Her songs are really phenomenal actually. You should check them out! Although later she ventured into the movies scene, she was worldly known as a singer first.

So for a long time, she had never graced the runway scene. In fact, she had never even thought about it. That is until Thierry requested her presence when he asked her to walk in his 1991 fashion show for his summer collection.

By heeding this request, it became her first-ever runway appearance. Whether it’s coincidental or not, her also famous daughter, Tracee Ellis Ross also walked in that very same show, years later.

4. He is the brain behind Madonna’s signature corsets

Madonna has a knack for really rocking her corsets. Truth is, if you try to copy her, you may not pull it off as well as her, but hey! It’s the thought that counts, right?! Anyway, her signature corsets which I always wonder how she manages to keep on without even a single malfunction yet there’s all the dancing, just boggles my mind.  Anyhow, all these are Thierry’s ideas. Impressive, huh?!

Thierry even went on ahead and designed a piece specifically name ‘Madonna,’ which actually marked his final look in his tenth anniversary collection. This look managed to tie Madonna’s mixed up use of different themes.

The look mashed up her use of religious themes given how it had a flowy, angelic shape and design and still had a  dazzling touch of blue and white star at the centre of the dress. In fact, Madonna’s most sexy and shimmery look during all her concerts were specifically designed by Thierry.

5. Thierry Mugler retired from fashion and stopped creating fashion looks in 2003

After a designing career of over 30 years,  this fashion legend finally retired from creation of any kind in 2003. He actually announced that he would shift his focus and priorities to perfume and photography.

When he stopped creating looks, his fashion house went under Nicola Formichetti who continued his legacy of styling A- list celebrities like Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry among others.

6. Thierry broke his stand and came out of retirement solely to design Kim Kardashian’s 2019 MET Gala’s look

As much as Mugler decided way back in 2003 that he was done with the fashion sense, one A-lister by the name Kim Kardashian convinced him out of retirement.

This was by him designing Kim’s iconic sheer sexy dress for the 2019 MET Gala that actually dripped with jewels to make it look like a wet look. It was quite an iconic look to be honest. This piece marked Thierry’s  first design for his namesake fashion in 20 years. It took him eight months to make the dress.

In her own words, Kim commented and said, 鈥淭his is the first time in 20 years Mr. Mugler has designed for the House of Mugler. So to come and design this gown for me is such an honour. This is about eight months in the making. He envisioned me this California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping.鈥

7. His styles were always out of this world. His creation could be from anything!

Thierry’s characteristic style draws on  a kind of sexual fetishism that actually sets him apart and what makes his designs termed radical.

His models would constantly resemble dominatrixes for their high heeled boots and corseted curves and accompanied by neck corsets and riding crops.

His most notorious ensemble hot red cowboy outfit consisting of a hat, corset, chaps and heels was really well done. It literally stopped the show together with the presentation of an inhuman, somewhat beastly looking woman who wore a dress to achieve just that.

Furthermore, Mugler frequently made garments of leather and rubber, some of which would make their wearers resemble giant insects drawn from science fiction. Examples of his less-theatrical outfits, such as his colorful and sharply tailored suits, were extremely popular, especially in the 1980s.

As of 2004 , Mugler suspended designing both couture and ready-to-wear, although he continued to produce special costumes. His styles can’t be copied anywhere because of how unique and out of this world they are.

8. Thierry opened his first boutique in 1978

In 1978, Thierry opened his first boutique in Paris and he really worked hard throughout the 80s to be able to build his empire.

By being able to acquire this formidable army of exalting supermodel and celebrity supporters that included the likes of Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, George Michael and even RuPaul, by the 1990s, Mugler managed to sell across the globe from Browns in London to Saks on Fifth Avenue.

In 1992, he even created his first ever haute couture collection as per the request of France鈥檚 Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.

9. Never shied away from making scandalous statements with his pieces

One of Mugler’s designs- Author; Stephen Kelly Photography-

Something about Mugler is that he never ever shied away from making extremely scandalous  statements with his designs.

His works would always express bold and often scandalous statements and themes, as expressed by this daring dress he made and sent to the runway in 1995. It was made of a classically elegant silhoutte and pearls that had well thought out cut outs.

10. Studied at the Starsbourg School of Decoartive Arts

A fashion Student- Author; University of the Fraser Valley-

By the time of his twenties, just right after a period of formally studying interior design at The Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts and moving to Paris, Thierry started working freelance for a number of different fashion designers. With that, he was able to create his first ever collection.
