The wave was brought to the world’s attention by a feature story in 1993 on ‘Surfer’ magazine, but traveling surfers were already visiting in the 1980s. Urban legend says Cloud 9 was named after a popular local chocolate bar, said to be the only snack available in Siargao at the time.

Apart from surfing, what makes Cloud 9 worth visiting are the rest of Siargao’s natural attractions. In and around Siargao’s 49 islands are stunning virgin beaches, pristine rock pools, secret lagoons, massive corals, and the Philippines’ largest contiguous mangrove.

4. Its history started when sailors who were in search of perfect wave discovered it

Siargao鈥檚 surfing history started in the 1980s when two sailors came to the island in search of the 鈥減erfect wave.鈥� They eventually discovered the power of Cloud 9 鈥� thanks to intense winds and currents from the Pacific Ocean and Siargao鈥檚 location at the edge of the Philippine Trench 鈥� within the municipality of General Luna.

Although Cloud 9 has brought Siargao much recognition from professional surfers like Kelly Slater and Anthony Kedis, the area still has a laid back vibe amidst the slowly growing population of tourist-related businesses such as hippie-style guesthouses, bars, and surf schools.

5. The Cloud 9 was discovered by two young men Tony Arruza and Steve Jones

Two young men Tony Arruza, an American Cuban descent, and Steve Jones, an Australian came to General Luna 鈥渋n search of a perfect wave.鈥� They surfed in that area now known as the 鈥淛acking Horse鈥�, near what is now 鈥淐loud 9鈥�.Word pread around in the Surfing world that there is a secret place in Siargao Island which has good surf.

Then in 1992 the world famous surfing photographer John Callahan with legendary people in the surfing world like, Kevin Davidson, John Slater and Taylor Knox took pictures riding the big surf in 鈥淐loud Nine鈥�. Said pictures landed in the surfing magazines in all Languages all over the world and 鈥� the ball started rolling.

There are 7 other surfing areas of world class quality like Cloud 9, in the town of Gen. Luna in the same summer months,  marlin yellow fin, tuna, sailfish dorado, wahoo and other big game fishes around area.

Its crystalline waters are so clean and pure that you can see schools of fish ten fathoms deep. Kayaking and sailing are also the favorite pastime of nature lovers who probes the hundred off inlets and hidden coves not only in General Luna but also of Siargao Island.

7. Transportation to Cloud 9 is easy and affordable 

Transportation to Cloud 9 is easy and affordable . From Siargao Airport to Cloud 9, it鈥檚 approximately a one-hour drive. It鈥檚 easy enough to jump in a tuk-tuk directly outside the airport and make the journey to General Luna.

The tuk-tuk cost is around 500 pesos total. The best time to surf is on a mid to high tide. It gets very shallow on low tide and the reef beneath the Cloud 9 wave is very sharp and unforgiving.

Cloud 9 is home to the 鈥楥loud 9 Surfing Cup鈥�, a WSL surf event that occurs every year at the peak of the Siargao surfing season between late September and early October.Each year, professional surfers from around the world compete against each other on the barreling right-hand wave.

The island has hosted the Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup for more than 25 years. The event has attracted more than 200 competitors from more than 20 countries annually, all battling for a spot on the Championship Tour.

The event is broadcasted in over 40 countries and WSL’s passionate fan base tuned in across various platforms to watch the event. A total of more 10 million people are reached in both local and global press coverage.
