Maggie Cheung is a Hong Kong actress and model. She was born on September 20, 1964. She is one of the biggest female stars in the Hong Kong film industry. Her family moved to the UK but she later returned to Hong Kong with her mother to visit her relatives.

She was discovered by advertising scouts. She became a professional model.  She began appearing in advertisements for some electrical products. She became famous for starring in action flicks such as ‘Police Story’, ‘The Heroic Trio’ and ‘Executioners’. Some comedy movies came in between, but her heart belonged to the romantic genre.

Her collaboration with Wong Kar- wai produced films such as ‘As Tears Go By’, ‘Days of Being Wild’, ‘2046’ and last but not least ‘In the Mood for Love”. The last is one of the best films ever made in the history of world cinema.

She has won many acting awards and has appeared in more than 80 films. She has established herself as one of the biggest movie stars, not only in Hong Kong but entire Asia.

She decided to retire from acting in 2004 but briefly returned in 2009 then left the industry again the following year. She has not made an on-screen appearance since the 2013 film Playtime.

When you are popular and a celebrity, your life is no longer yours. All your business is out there. Maggie has managed to keep her life as private as she can.

Even when Maggie was at the height of her career, she was never the kind of actress who liked to share information about her personal life. She does not have active social media and she doesn’t do many interviews.

She is a very warm and very sensitive person. She refrains from outside interactions and only feels good in front of a camera. This could be the reason why she has played in so many films, almost 100 films over sixteen years since she was 18!

Even before Maggie got into acting, it was clear that she was destined to be a star.  The good-looking 18 years old Maggie obtained consent from her mother and signed up for the Hong Kong sisters competition.

The competition sought to select 50 beauties from hundreds of applicants. The applicants undergo various training in manners and appearances. Maggie Cheung bravely participated in this competition. In the quasi-finals, she was awarded the title of “Miss Photogenic”, and she was awarded the honor of “Second Hong Kong Sister” in the finals.

She knew then that her wish to be an actor was about to come true. She auditioned in production houses and just like that, her career took off.

3. She loves to Sing

After being anointed Best Actress at Cannes in 2004 for an English-language role, she took time off. Maggie is multi-talented. She is into arts. She is passionate about music. She pursued her plans to pursue other interests, such as music.

Since retiring from acting, Maggie has had the opportunity to focus more on singing. Although she has released several songs over the years and done lots of performances, it doesn’t appear that she’s released a full-length album.

Giving back to the community is something that has always been important to Maggie. In 2010, she became an ambassador for UNICEF.

She had long admired UNICEF’s work and was honored by the ambassador position.  She took up her new role as a spokesperson and advocate for the most vulnerable children in China. She aimed to help and improve public awareness of critical issues facing children.

5.  Cheung  had a childhood dream of being a hairstylist

Maggie is a woman of many passions. Another thing she adores is hairdressing. Even if her childhood dream did not come true, she still practices it on her friends every now and then.

She is a hardworking woman and a go-getter. Even if she did not end up in the cinema world, she would have probably become a sought hairdresser.

6. She is a versatile actress

Initially, because of her good looks, she was only offered the role of a beautiful Asian woman in Western films. Center Stage (1991) was a turning point in her career.

Her acting debut is in 1984 with the film ‘Prince Charming’, in a small comic role. Jackie Chan noticed her and made her a part of his 1985 action comedy film ‘Police Story’. The movie was a major success and turned Maggie into an overnight star.

For the next few years, the success of ‘Police Story’ haunted her as she only got offers to play similar roles in films. She wanted a change in image, and when in 1988 a fairly young director named Wong Kar-wai offered her a role in his romantic drama ‘As Tears Go By’, she couldn’t refuse.

This was the first time that Maggie had come across true appreciation for her acting abilities and this turned out to be the first of many more collaborations she’d make with Wong. She then started doing more serious roles and the critics eventually regarded her as a great actress.

She followed the critical success with ‘Full Moon in New York’, for which she was adorned with a Golden Horse Award. ‘A Fishy Story’ also got her an acting award at the Hong Kong Film Awards. For her film Centre Stage’, she won the Best Actress award at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival and became the first Asian actress to achieve the feat.

Apart from being a good actress, Cheung proved that she was a versatile actress as well. She proved her martial art skills in the early 90s with films like ‘Executioners’ and ‘The Heroic Trio’. She further played a praiseworthy role in the film ‘New Dragon Gate Inn’, and critics started praising her growing versatility as an actor.

7. She has never trained as an actress

The kind of roles she got at the beginning affected her ambition in acting negatively. She was initially very nervous in long dialogues. The director would then I cut most of her lines, so she could concentrate on her body language. This is what she was good at.

She joined acting without any formal training. In those times there were no auditions in Hong Kong. She learned on the job and well she did.  One outstanding performance was seen in Wong Kar Wai’s film, Ashes of Time.

8. Cheung is the first Chinese actress ever to win the Best Actress award at the Berlin International Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival

As a young actress, she had bright eyes an innocent face, and a lively character. She was popular and was selected as one of the “Top Ten Most Popular Movie Stars in Hong Kong in 1986”. She was also voted “The Most Popular Movie Star in 1986” by Japanese fans.

Later, she won the Golden Horse Award and the Academy Award for Best Actress repeatedly and became the first Asian actor to win the best actress at the Berlin Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival.

9. She dated a man who told her she was ugly

Attack on the physical attribute of a person is one demeaning act. It could lead to one’s loss of confidence and self-esteem. Maggie was a good-looking young girl. However, in the eyes of director Er Dongsheng, her image is not so good-looking.

In 1983, when she became the runner-up in the beauty pageant, Er told her that she was too ugly to have won the award. Surprisingly, he soon fell in love with her.

The two hit it off and were frequently rumored to get married, but after three years, they ended up breaking up. After breaking up, Er, a sore loser claimed that he was relieved and that he would sleep more soundly. Talk of a narcissist. Maggie dodged a bullet with that one!

10. Many critics called her a vase

Maggie has always received backlash for her acting skills. Critics claimed that she had only good looks and no acting skills. She worked hard to put off all those negative comments and the people who questioned her acting skills.

Maggie has gone ahead to win 11 actresses, and get numerous nominations. This means she is brilliant in her career. She could have actually had Hollywood success but she chose not to.

She is versatile and multilingual but she never seemed interested in conquering Hollywood. She turned down offers to be a Bond girl and X-Men character. She claims that Chinese girls are offered cliché roles.
