1. Captain William Brown was the First Foreigner to Sail to Honolulu

Earlier on, there were no foreigners who had set sail in Honolulu. However, Captain William made history with his voyage.

In 1794, Britain’s Captain William Brown became the first foreigner to ever set sail to Honolulu Harbour. The captain is the person who established the Honolulu port.

Since Captain William Brown arrived and established the port, it became a major area in Honolulu. The port became a major destination for merchant ships especially those that follow the routes between Asia and America.

2. World War Two Pearl Harbour Attack took place in Honolulu

During World War Two, Honolulu was most impacted. The 1941 attack affected this area badly.

The Pearl Harbour naval base was one of the majorly hit places. It was the only remaining place that was widely affected by the worst attacks in the United States.

The attack on Honolulu was the most affected place which prompted the United States forces to join World War Two to fight with the Allies in Europe. It took place in Honolulu at a naval base which was of the same name.

3. USS Arizona Memorial is the Final Resting Place for Several Soldiers

The Honolulu Harbour attack was so devastating with several lives being taken. A total of two thousand four hundred and three lives were tragically lost.

Approximately one thousand, one hundred and two soldiers were buried in Honolulu. The burial area of these soldiers became a memorial place.

The USS Arizona Memorial marks the final resting place of those who were killed during the Pearl Harbour attack. People are allowed to visit this area and pay their last respects.

4. The Only Royal Palace in the States is Found in Honolulu

Hawaii was the Kingdom of Hawaii before it became a United States state and had a royal family. Royal residences were constructed in Honolulu due to this royalty in the area.

The Lolani Palace in Honolulu was the first royal residential area in the United States. It remains to be the only royal palace in the United States.

One of the greatest historic facts about Honolulu is that Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States was not in Honolulu. He was born on August 1961.

6. A 300,000-Year-Old Volcanic Mountain overlooks Honolulu

The stunning history of Honolulu is unique in terms of its natural beauty. There is an iconic natural Diamond Head Mountain which is also known as Diamond Head State Monument or Diamond Head Crater.

It is believed that this volcanic mountain is at least three hundred thousand years old. Some estimate that it might be about five hundred thousand years old.

7. The First Ruler of Hawaii’s Royal Court is in Honolulu

The Kingdom of Hawaii was ruled by kings. The first ruler of the kingdom of Hawaii was known as Kamehameha I.

He moved his royal court to present-day downtown Honolulu in 1809. There was a battle during this period which was known as the Battle of Nu’uanu.

After winning this battle, the ruler moved the court to Waikiki in 1804 and later to Honolulu after five years. The court was later moved to Kailua-Kona in 1812 but Kamehameha I’s successor made Honolulu the permanent capital and retained the royal court.

8. The Hawaii State Supreme Court is Housed in Honolulu

Honolulu houses several important monuments for Hawaii. The Supreme Court of Hawaii is located in Honolulu in the famous Ali’iolani Hale Building.

This building is also known as the Lolani Palace. This Court was established in 1841.

It includes five justices who serve for ten years. The role of this court is to review other decisions made in Hawaii’s courts and offer the final verdict. Beside the Honolulu Hale building is also the home to the Honolulu County seat of government and the mayor’s chamber.

9. The Queen’s Former Summer Residence is in Honolulu

Other than the other iconic monuments in Honolulu, there is also one great residence in the city. The Lolani Palace is the most popular, but the Queen’s former summer residence is also a worthy place to visit.

The Queen Emma Summer Palace which acted as the royal family’s summer residence between 1857 and 1885 is located in Honolulu. This is a great place to visit.

10. A Large Military Cemetery for The US Conflicts Victims is in Honolulu

Several Allied countries lost their soldiers during World War Two. These soldiers were buried in various countries and cities including Honolulu.

The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific is located in Honolulu. This is a military cemetery which honours those who perished and are still missing in various US conflicts including WW2 and the Vietnam War.

It houses around twenty-five thousand graves of soldiers. There is also the homage to Ellison Onizuka, a Hawaiian astronaut that was part of the Challenger crew.
