It was established under the National Law School of India Act (Karnataka Act 22 of 1986), notified in the Official Gazette in 1987.

Established in the year 2008, National Law University located in Delhi, is also known as NLU.

It is a state-level university located in the capital of India an out of all the 23 NLUs in India, NLU, Delhi is among the leading ones.

The University was established in 1998 by an Act of the Andhra Pradesh State Legislature.
