While most people try their best to avoid an encounter with the paranormal, there are also a significant number of us who actively seek out the adrenaline rush of being surrounded by the mysterious unknown.

A haunted tale often intrigues most of us. The element of something spooky that we may or may not see but can feel its presence is a thought that is both thrilling as well as scary. But things take a different turn when the story gets too real.

When it comes to legends and lores of haunted places in India, every city and town has its own list.

Needless to say, haunted destinations are not for all kinds of tourists. It’s a road less travelled.

The curiosity to find out more about the unknown has inspired people to travel to all four corners of the world for many centuries.

Haunted tourism cannot be called an industry in India, but some places have intriguing stories connected to them that can easily pique the interests of those who actively seek out mysteries of the unknown.

If one has to talk about haunted places in India, the list can become very long. But based on popular myths and legends.

India, the land of thousands of untold stories, has its own share of eerie destinations. Here are 10 spooky haunted houses and places in India.

 

 

1. Brij Raj Bhavan Heritage Hotel – Kota, Rajastan

The 178-year-old Brij Raj Bhavan Palace in Kota, Rajasthan, which was converted into a heritage hotel in the 1980s, has a resident ghost! The gentleman ghost of Major Burton is said to be harmless.

Once upon a time, a certain Major Charles Burton visited Kota and settled down in this heritage property with his family.

When the famous Sepoy Mutiny broke out in 1857, a group of Indian soldiers attacked the Brij Raj Bhawan palace too.

They killed the English officer and his children living in the palace. After the murder, the then King of Kota recovered the dead bodies and buried them in the central hall of the palace.

Soon after, the local residents of the area began seeing strange figures and hearing spooky sounds.

Reportedly, the Maharani of Kota would see Major Burton in her study room as an aged man with white hair and a walking stick.

He would wander throughout the palace as a harmless resident. But, with drowsy guards on duty, he would be really strict. The ghost would slap the guards to wake them up from their slumber.

2. The Ghost Town of Bhangarh – Rajasthan

Rajasthan is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the country and attracts several foreigners too every year to its historic forts and majestic palaces.

But it is also infamous for the number of haunted places it is believed to have at Bhangarh Fort the Archaeological Survey of India doesn’t permit people to enter the premises after sunset.

The legend goes that during the 16th century, a tantric named Singhia fell in love with Ratnavati, the beautiful princess of Bhangarh.

And knowing it was a hopeless match, decided to use his magic to seduce her. However, the princess uncovered his plans and sentenced him to death.

Before his death, enraged by the turn of events, he cursed the palace to doom and the town to be roofless and miserable forever.

Nearby locals believe that anyone who goes into the fort after dark won’t make it back.

3. Kuldhara Village – Rajasthan

Rajasthan sure does have the choicest selection of deserted ghostly villages and towns!

The Kuldhara village is located near Jaisalmer and was originally inhabited by Paliwal Brahmins.

The lore speaks of the sudden disappearance of all the villagers of Kuldhara as well as 83 other nearby villages in 1825 into thin air, leaving no trace of their whereabouts.

It is said that the minister of state had fallen in love with a girl from the village and had threatened to impose huge taxes upon the entire village unless they married her to him.

To protect the honour of the girl, the chief of Kulhara and surrounding areas abandoned their villages and cursed the land to remain unoccupied for eternity.

4. Delhi Cantonment – Delhi

By day, this is one of the most beautiful spots in Delhi, but by night it’s a different story.

It is said that the road leading through Delhi Cantonment has a notorious, ghostly hitchhiker who walks around aimlessly, clad all in white, waving for passersby to stop their cars.

It is believed that people who have agreed to give her a ride are never seen again.

Those who don’t stop have claimed that the woman runs parallel to their window, matching the car’s speed until they reach the border of Delhi Cantonment.

5. D’Souza Chawl – Mumbai

D’Souza Chawl in Mahim, Mumbai is also one of the most haunted places in India. The residents around the chawl claim that they have seen the ghost of a woman hanging around the well.

Souza Chawl, Mahim It is said that a lady haunts the chawl in nights.

The story behind it is that a woman fell into the boundaryless well and died there crying for help. 

Since then, the chawl is said to be haunted by her soul who is known as ‘the lady of the well.’

However, the woman is only seen during the late evening and vanishes before the sun rises.

Travellers looking for ghostly experiences must include the D’Souza Chawl in their list of haunted houses in India.

6. Mukesh Mills – Mumbai

Mukesh Mills is a popular location for TV serials and Bollywood films. Located in Mumbai’s Tony Colaba area, Mukesh Mills takes you back in time with its dilapidated structure and warehouse-like look.

But the rundown structure is sure to send shivers down your spine not just with its interiors but because people who have worked here have had some unusual experiences here.

But it seems like Mukesh Mills is as popular among the spirit world as it is in Bollywood.

According to crew members and even actors who have worked here, there is something spooky about this location, so much so that shoots wrap up before sunset as no one wants to be here late night.

Bipasha Basu who shot one of her films here had a rather strange incident to share. During the shoot here, she found it particularly difficult to deliver her dialogues in one part of the mills.

 However, she was perfectly fine when she was in any other part. It was as if someone was trying to stop her from saying her lines.

7.  Dumas Beach- Gujarat

It is considered one of the most haunted places in India. This beach is located very near Surat, one of the developed cities in the state.

This beach was for long used as a Hindu burial ground, therefore, being the resting place of tortured souls.

This particular beach draws countless visitors almost every day as legend has it that the winds which blow fiercely come along with whispers.

There have also been reports of people disappearing mysteriously and having never been found again.

If you have the stomach for it! you can test the waters yourself by taking a midnight stroll along the beach if you have company.

You will find Dumas Beach one of the most mysterious places in India.

8.  Shaniwarwada Fort – Pune

Shaniwarwada Fort in Pune, is a historical delight in addition to being one of the ghostly places in India.

A mighty fort built by the rulers of the Peshwa Dynasty contains many bone-chilling stories within its walls.

None is as heartbreaking as what happened hundreds of years back at this mighty fort.

A prince, heir to the royal throne, was killed on his close relative’s orders. It is said that visitors taking a trip to the fort after nightfall can still hear his cries for help.

“The heart-wrenching sobs of Narayan Rao, the young prince, are still heard by those who stay close-by, especially on full moon evenings.

Visiting the Wada on no-moon evenings is also a no-go.

9.   GP Block – Meerut

 

Another notorious site for witnessing haunting spirits and paranormal activities is the GP Block in Meerut.

Although the structure lies in a well-populated zone, people who pass the site claim to have seen many strange things.

The building is known for its numerous ghosts, and many claim to have seen four men playing cards or a girl coming out in a red dress.

However, these people disappear suddenly and no one has a clue who they are or where they live.

Today, it is well established that these individuals are indeed ghosts. GP Block in Meerut indeed is popular among those interested in paranormal activities and ghosts.

10.  Jatinga – Assam

This tiny village with a population of 2500 has one of the most puzzling phenomena in the world, namely recurring mass bird suicides.

The village is in fact known worldwide as the place where the bird suicides happen on moonless nights.

The phenomenon happens at the end of monsoon when the night is dark with some bit of fog.

Taking place between 6 pm to 9 pm, the bird suicides are an unknown and unexplained event. The birds simply fall from the sky unexpectedly, shaking the bones of even the bravest of men.

Numerous scientists and naturalists have attempted to solve the puzzle, but none have been successful in providing the right answer.
