The history of the gymnasium dates back to ancient Greece, where the literal meaning of the Greek word gymnasium was a school for naked exercise.

Gymnasium, a large room used and equipped for the performance of various sports, The gymnasiums were of great significance to the ancient Greeks.

Uchimura is the only gymnast, male or female, to win six straight world all-around titles and two Olympic all-around golds in a row, dominating the all-around on the global stage from 2009 to 2016.

Uchimura, after battling injuries throughout his last Olympic cycle, competed on solely the high bar in Tokyo and fell in qualifying, failing to make the final.

Tsurumi is the first Japanese woman gymnast to win a World Championships medal in 43 years.

She tore her Achilles tendon, leaving her out of competition for the rest of the season, and she retired from the sport.

She represented Japan at the 2015, 2017, and 2019 World Championships she helped Japan qualify seventh in the team final.

In the 2015 Asian Championships, she won team and all-around gold, and in the Rio Olympics, She performed well. 

Sugihara sustained an injury to her left ankle at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, and withdrew from the balance beam during the team event.

In 2019 she was given the Hyogo Prefecture Sports Excellence Award in Japan, she took up the sport at age four in Osaka, Japan.

9. Yukio Endo

Endo was part of the first Japanese team that succeeded to win gold medals in the team event at the Summer Olympics.

Yukio Endo attended the University of Education in Tokyo, where his legendary status in gymnastics began.

He was the All-Around Champion of Japan, defeating legions of athletes who are to this day legends in their own right.

The artistic gymnastics legend Yukio Endo died at the age of 72 years after a long fight with esophageal cancer.

10. Minobe Yu

Minobe competed for the national team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Women’s artistic team all-around and the 2012 Summer Olympics in the Women’s artistic team all-around.

She was coached by Chieko Tsukahara, wife of legendary Japanese gymnast Mitsuo Tsukahara.
