On June 4, 2001, Kubo Takefusa was born. He is a winger for Real Sociedad of La Liga and the Japan national team. When you are nicknamed the ‘Japanese Messi’, you know you must be at least half-decent.

Takefusa Kubo began playing football at the age of seven for the neighborhood team FC Persimmon in his native Kawasaki. At age of 10, he joined the famed La Masia (Barcelona) academy but was forced to leave following Club’s Transfer Ban. Upon his return to Japan, he joined FC Tokyo’s youth squad and eventually became the youngest player and goal scorer in J-League history.

Kubo has experience playing for a variety of teams, including FC Tokyo, Yokohama F. Marinos (on loan), Real Madrid, Mallorca(loan), Villarreal(loan), Getafe(loan), and Real Sociedad (currently).

1. Started Playing Football at The Age of 7

Takefusa Kubo began playing football at the age of seven for FC Persimmon, a neighborhood team located in Kawasaki, his hometown. He attended the FC Barcelona Soccer Camp in August 2009 when he was eight years old, and there he won MVP.

He was chosen to play for the FC Barcelona School team in the Sodexo European Rusas Cup. The Cup was held in Belgium, in April 2010. Even though his team came in third, he was named MVP. He started playing for the Kawasaki Frontale junior youth team after returning home.

2. Joined Barcelona at 10 but Left Following Club’s Transfer Ban

Takefusa Kubo was asked to join FC Barcelona’s La Masia youth academy in August 2011 after passing the trial. He started off playing for Barca Aleví C. (U11). With 74 goals in 30 games during his first full season (2012–13), he led the league in scoring.

He was promoted to Barca Infantil A (U14) in 2014–15, his third complete season. It was discovered that the Spanish club had broken FIFA’s rules regarding under-18 young international transfers. This made Kubo ineligible to play for the club. In March 2015, he went back to Japan in pursuit of playing time and joined FC Tokyo’s junior youth team.

3. Youngest Player And Goal scorer in J-League History

In 2016, Takefusa Kubo joined the FC Tokyo U-18 team. He was elevated to the senior side in September 2016 at the age of fifteen. He officially made his J3 League debut for the reserve team on November 5 against AC Nagano Parceiro as a halftime substitute.

With a record of 15 years, 5 months, and 1 day, he made his professional debut in the J. League. Kubo scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Cerezo Osaka U-23 on April 15, 2017. This made him the J. League’s youngest-ever scorer with 15 years and ten months.

4. Signed with Real Madrid in 2019

Spanish club Real Madrid acquired Kubo on a five-year contract on June 14, 2019. He was scheduled to spend most of the 2019–20 season for Real Madrid B, despite being registered with their U-19 squad. He did, however, play frequently with Real Madrid’s first team while they were on their pre-season tour of Germany and the United States.

5. On 1st September 2019, Kubo Made His La Liga Debut

Kubo signed a season-long loan with RCD Mallorca on August 22. He joined Yoshito Okubo and Akihiro Ienaga as the third Japanese player in Mallorca’s history.

He participated for 15 minutes in a 2-0 defeat to Valencia on September 1 to make his La Liga debut. On November 10, 2019, he scored his first goal in a 3-1 victory over Villarreal.

6. Kubo Has Spent Several Seasons on Loan

On August 22, 2019, Kubo began a season-long loan with RCD Mallorca. He returned to Real Madrid after the 2019-2020 season. On 10 August 2020, he was loaned to Villarreal CF until the end of the 2020–21 season.

On January 8, 2021, his loan was terminated after he had primarily served as a substitute. Kubo joined Getafe CF on loan for the rest of the season as soon as he left fellow top-tier team, Villarreal.

After the 2020-2021 season, he returned to Real Madrid. Kubo returned to RCD Mallorca on August 12, 2021, for a season-long loan.

7. Currently Plays at Real Sociedad

Kubo signed a long-term contract with Real Sociedad on July 19, 2022.  He made his La Liga debut by scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 victory away to Cádiz in the team’s first game of the season.

Kubo has participated in Japan’s national teams at all levels, from U-15 to senior. He was chosen to play for Japan’s U-20 national team in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup at the age of fifteen.

Kubo was called up to the senior team for the first time for the 2019 Copa América just before turning eighteen. On June 9, 2019, he made his professional debut in a friendly match against El Salvador after replacing Takumi Minamino in the 67th minute.

He was a part of the 22-player under-23 squad list for the 2020 Summer Olympics in July 2021. Kubo scored Japan’s opening goal against South Africa in the 2020 Olympics on July 22, 2021. Kubo will be hoping to be shortlisted in the world Cup 2022 in Qatar after Japan qualified.

9. Kubo Has an Individual Honor in His Name

Takefusa Kubo was included in the UEFA La Liga Revelation Team of the Year:2019-20. Kubo is ranked 4th among all players from Japan in the transfer market.
