Sola Aoi, a Japanese national is a former AV (Audio/Video) idol, nude model, and also film and television actress.  Over the course of her career, she has starred in more than 600 adult films. This was between 2002 and 2011. Thus, she is considered one of the most famous AV idols of the 2000s. She is also considered one of the most influential individuals in East Asia. Her popularity as an adult video actress led up to her celebrity status as a very well-known media personality both in Japan and abroad.

1. Sola worked various jobs in food service before her breakthrough

Just like most celebrities, Sola also had a humble beginning. When she was a student, she worked many part-time jobs, especially in the food service industry. Such joints included pizza parlors, pubs, and even sushi bars. All this was so that she would become a pre-school. That was actually her dream.

Her stage name, Sola Aoi literally translates to ‘Blue Sky.’ When she was asked during an interview how she arrived at that name, she explained,

“My agency asked what color I liked. I said blue [aoi in Japanese]. He also asked what I like in general. I said sky [sora in Japanese]. So, he chose Aoi Sora.”

3. Sola Aoi was named Global Brand Ambassador for the 2022/2023 year

Just last year in 2022, Sola Aoi was named the WE88 Global Brand Ambassador for the 2022/23 year. This was meant to promote and boost the brand’s presence all over Asia. On the same note, she collaborated with Malaysian rapper, songwriter, singer, and filmmaker, Namewee as the main female lead in a music video for the song, ‘Someone Else’s Wife.’

In 2009, Sola Aoi appeared in a Korean TV drama known as ‘Korean Classroom.’ This four-part series was about three Japanese girls traveling to Korea among which was her and fellow co- stars, Mihiro and Rio. Sola later appeared on so many other Korean shows while still, Korea promoting Korean Classroom. In Japan, in 2010, she starred in a comedy horror film known as ‘Big Tits Zombie.’ Here she starred as a zombie-killing stripper. Additionally, later that year when in Hong Kong, she starred in an erotic thriller film, ‘Revenge: A Love Story.’ This film reached theatres in December 2010 and was a success.

5. Was scouted by a talent agency while still in high school

While still in high school, in her third year, Sola Aoi was scouted by a talent agency for gravure modeling in Shibuya. She decided to then venture into the adult entertainment industry with the goal of working her way towards working on TV and various other parts of the entertainment industry. One time she noted, “If there was only the AV industry, I couldn’t do it.”

In 2011, Aoi had the opportunity of starring in an Indonesian horror movie known as ‘Suster Keramas 2 (Evil Nurse 2).’ This made her the third Japanese AV actress to appear in an Indonesian film. The other two were Rin Sakuragi in the original of the same film and Maria Ozawa in a 2009 film that was called ‘Kidnapping Miyabi.’ The earlier films even though they were successful, evoked a lot of protests from conservative Muslim groups in Indonesia and thus Aoi’s participation in the film was kept a secret. She later admitted that working in Indonesia gave her a pause but all the same she wanted to participate in a mainstream career. She said she was “looking forward to coming into contact with foreigners and engaging in communication.”

7. Her high profile in China led to a lot of controversy

Aoi’s very high profile in China didn’t go so well. It was meant with a lot of controversies fueled and exemplified by the insults directed towards her because of a plea she made in 2012 for a peaceful solution to the Senkaku islands dispute between Japan and China. In 2013, a culture war erupted when calligraphy created by Sola Aoi was auctioned for a lot of money ($95,000). A newspaper called the calligraphy childish and the auction was considered by many just a publicity stunt.

8. Her popularity enabled her to enter further into mainstream entertainment

Thanks to her popularity, Sola Aoi was able to enter further into mainstream entertainment. This includes film, television, and radio. In 2005 for instance, she starred as a high school girl in the film, Raw Summer. This romantic comedy actually won the Grand Prize in the Off competition of February 2005. She also appeared in the late-night TV Tokyo manga-based production, ‘Joo,’ which aired from October to December 2005. She then later returned in a special guest appearance for the show’s sequel, ‘Joo Virgin. This was later in 2009.
