Claudio Miguel Pizarro Bosio was born on October 3, 1978, in Callao, Peru. He is a retired Peruvian professional footballer who played as a striker. He is currently acting as Club Ambassador for Bayern Munich.

With the most goals and games played in Europe and German Football, he is largely regarded as the greatest representative of Peruvian football in Europe. Pizarro has played with several top-tier clubs, including Werder Bremen, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and FC K枚ln.

He also represented Peru’s national team in international competitions. Pizarro is the fifth-highest Latin American scorer in European Cups (UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, and UEFA Europa League) with 48 goals. Here are some facts about Claudio Pizarro.

1. Deportivo Pesquero and Alianza Lima Are Pizarro鈥檚 Startup Clubs

At only 17 years Pizarro started his professional career with Deportivo Pesquero. His first professional match was against Alianza Lima in 1996. At the end of the season, he had 3 goals and 16 appearances to his name.

Pizarro moved to Alianza Lima in the 1997-98 season. Luckily, he quickly established himself as a key member of the team. Over the two seasons he spent at the club, he accumulated 25 goals. Additionally, he was also part of the team that ended in second position in the Torneo Apertura of Peru in 1999. His impressive performance was not unnoticed. He attracted several European clubs. Finally, Werder Bremen won the race for his signature in 1999.

2. Signed Five Times with Werder Bremen

Pizarro started his European club career by joining Werder Bremen for the first time in the Summer of 1999. By then, he was only 20 years old. On August 28, of that year, he made his Bundesliga debut as a second-half substitute in a 1-1 tie against Hertha BSC.

He ended his first Bundesliga season scoring 10 goals in 25 appearances. His second season was similarly impressive. In the 2000-01 season, he accumulated 28 goals. Pizarro鈥檚 second stint was as a season loanee from Chelsea on 15 August 2008. He ended the 200-09 with 17 goals in 26 appearances.

Pizarro鈥檚 third spell was on 18 August 2009 after permanently signing with Werder Bremen for an undisclosed fee. The 2010-11 season saw him off with 14 goals in 29 appearances. He just kept getting better. In the following season, he scored 18 goals in 29 appearances.

On September 7, 2015, Pizarro returned to Werder Bremen on a one-year contract. This marked his fourth stint. Unfortunately, he only scored once in 19 appearances. At the end of the season, his contract wasn鈥檛 renewed.

For the fifth time in his career, Pizarro joined Werder Bremen on July 29, 2018, after agreeing to a one-year deal. Over two seasons, he only managed five goals.

3. Signed Twice with Bayern Munich

After the impressive seasons at Werder Bremen, on his first stint, his name became famous among top-tier European teams as a transfer option. On 7 June 2001, he signed for Bayern Munich. He scored 15 goals in 30 Bundesliga and 4 German Cup appearances with Bayern Munich. Not bad!

Pizarro spent the next five seasons at Bayern Munich. In 174 Bundesliga appearances, he managed to score 71 goals. During his time at Bayern, he earned himself the nickname “Bomber of the Andes鈥. The nickname was related to his Peruvian origin as well as to the legendary Bayern striker Gerd M眉ller. He transferred to Chelsea at end of the 2006-07 season.

On 26 May 2012, Pizarro returned to Bayern Munich after signing a one-year contract. He ended the 2012-13 season with 13 goals in 28 appearances. In his second season, he managed 24 appearances with 11 goals. Bayern refused to renew his contract after his unsuccessful 2014-15 season where he only scored 1 goal in 17 appearances. His second spell wasn鈥檛 as amazing as his first spell.

4. Signed For Chelsea In 2007

Pizarro鈥檚 Chelsea spell wasn鈥檛 as amazing as spells at Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich. His contract expired with Bayern Munich at the end of the 2006-07 season and he joined Chelsea on a Bosman transfer, signing a four-year contract on 1 July 2007.

Pizarro鈥檚 season started well, scoring a goal on his Premier League Debut against Birmingham City. Later on, Chelsea appointed new manager Avram Grant after coach Jose Mourinho鈥檚 departure. They also signed French striker Anelka. Things toppled for Pizarro as he was no longer needed by the new manager.

He ended the season with only 2 goals in 27 appearances. He was then sent off on a season-long loan and then permanently signed by his former club Werder Bremen.

5. FC K枚ln Was One Of Pizarro鈥檚 Unfortunate Spells

Pizarro moved to FC K枚ln on September 2017 after signing a one-year contract. Unfortunately, the team got relegated after a defeat to SC Freiburg on 28 April 2018. He had only scored a single goal in 16 appearances. According to his previous average performances, the season was a stinker! After his contract expired, he moved to Werder Bremen.

6. Regular for Peru’s National Team

Pizarro made his international debut in February 1999 against Ecuador. He went on to be a starting player at the 2004,2007 and 2015 Copa Am茅rica tournaments, as well as FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns for the 2002,2006,2010,2014, and 2018.

Pizarro is considered one of the best players who ever played for the Peru National Team. He is the fifth-highest scorer with 20 goals and is ranked tenth with the most matches played,85.

7. Oldest Bundesliga Scorer

Aged 40 years old, Pizarro was still grappling with Bundesliga defenses half his age. He first broke the record with a stoppage equalizer against Hertha Berlin. By then, he was 40 years and 136 days of age, just 15 days older than Miroslav Votava, the former record holder.

Pizarro wasn鈥檛 done yet with breaking records. He scored his last-ever Bundesliga goal- an 88th -the minute winner against RB Leipzig on the campaign’s final day, lifting the record to 40 years 227 days. What a way to be remembered!

8. Holds the Record for The Oldest Hat-Trick in Bundesliga

Previously, the oldest Bundesliga hat trick was held by Manfred Burgsm眉ller, another Werder Bremen striker. While Pizarro was at Werder Bremen-his third stint, he scored 3 times in his team’s 4-1 victory at Bayer Leverkusen. He was then aged 37 years and 151 days, almost a year older than Burgsm眉ller. To add to that, he finished the season with 14 goals in 28 appearances regardless of his old age.

9. Bundesliga’s Second All-Time Foreign-Born Scorer

Pizarro seemed to have made Bundesliga his home with 197 goals in 490 appearances. He was the all-time leading foreign-born scorer till Lewandowski surpassed him with over 115 Bundesliga goals.

Fortunately for him, his tally of 197 will keep him in second place -and comfortably inside the top 10 -for a long time. His last-ever goal was against RB Leipzig on the final day of the 2018-19 campaign.

10. He Is Amazing Off the Pitch as He Was On

Pizarro has two sons and a daughter with his teenage love, Karla Salcedo. The kids were all born in Germany. Pizarro shares ownership of the racing horse ‘Crying Lightning’ with fellow professional footballer Joey Barton.

The horse competed at the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai in January 2011. Pizarro is serving as Bayern Munich鈥檚 Ambassador as of 15 September 2020.
