Top Places to Stay in Lisbon’s Alfama

The Alfama is sometimes referred to as central Lisbon. It is the hill-covered area that reaches north from the Tagus waters and is the oldest district in the Portuguese capital.

The Alfama contains some of the most historic streets, buildings and public squares in the city. It is also one of the least gentrified parts of Lisbon and is often described as colorful, rustic, aesthetically deteriorative and authentically Portuguese.

Airbnb in the Alfama – by Airbnb –

When visiting Lisbon the Alfama is one of the best neighborhoods to stay in. It is central while still avoiding the crowds and chaotic foot traffic that areas like Chiado and Bairro Alto have to embrace nearby. The Alfama is a lot bigger than most suburbs in Lisbon, so there is ample space to allow the tourist attractions to go unnoticed if need be.

Here are some great accommodation options to consider when looking for places to book.

Palacio Belmonte in Lisbon’s Alfama

The Palacio Belmonte sits on the western boundary of the Alfama, close to where one would cross into the district from Chiado .

This luxury hotel is build inside of a very old, very historic 15th century palace building that survived the Great Earthquake in 1755.

The property is utterly exquisite, staying here will cost you a small fortune but it really is a once in a life time experience of opulence. There are parts of the palace that reflect more of a a Greek island vibe and others that feel distinctly Portuguese.

The Alfama is a hill-filled part of Lisbon, and this old palace sits on the top of one of them. The views are incredible; there are multiple terraces around the property on which you can enjoy some time with the view, or even dine.

Most of the spaces available in the hotel are full sized suites, some with large communal areas. The hotel is also well known for their ballroom and piano entertainment venues, which sees many events taking place on the grounds throughout the year.

Solar do Castelo in Lisbon’s Alfama

The Solar do Castelo won’t burn a hole into your pocket quite like the afore mentioned option. This is another hotel built into a slightly more modern 18th century building right on top of the Moorish Castelo do St. Jorge hilltop in the Alfama.

The hotel offers individual rooms or suites, all with a chic and contemporary style incorporated into the Portuguese architectural scheme.

The breakfast at Solar do Castelo is quite something. If you’ve stayed in Lisbon hotels before you’ll know that they compete to put on the best breakfast spreads.

The only issue with Solar do Castelo is that the nearest metro is a 2km walk further up the Alfama hillside. If you’re happy to do this or otherwise use taxis each day then the location won’t be a problem.

Airbnb in Lisbon’s Alfama

There is a growing community in Lisbon for Airbnb hosts in the Alfama. It took a while for the neighborhood to get on board with the movement, what with most residents in these parts being long-lived Lisbon locals who are skeptical about renting their personal space to strangers.

Some of the most beautiful Portuguese Airbnb’s are now available all over the Alfama; some tucked in hideaway apartment buildings and other boating proud views over the tumbling rooftops and hillsides.

Airbnb in the Alfama – by Airbnb –

What I like about Airbnb in the Alfama is that there is really no general price average for the neighborhood. You can find places for a little as what you’d pay in a Lisbon hostel, and then there are places that go for hundreds of euros per night and offer unfathomable amenities.

Get onto the Airbnb website today and begin browsing through Alfama-stays and you’ll see what I mean.

Eurostars Museum in Lisbon’s Alfama

I like the Eurostars Museum hotel in the Alfama. I like that it’s close to the Tagus water, I like that it’s a few minutes walk to a metro train, I like that there are a lot of restaurants in the immediate vicinity to cate your dinner every evening. I like it.

As far as interiors go in the Alfama, this is one of the least exciting hotels. The building itself is old and interesting to look at but the hotel is very much a space of practicality and contemporary design.

For the price, the location and the quality, there really isn’t any reason to exclude this hotel from serious consideration. It might not be the rustic, Portuguese housing you envisioned for your stay in Lisbon, but you’ll have this on your doorstep from the minute you step outside each morning.

Breakfast at Eurostars is complimentary to all guests.

Memmo Alfama in Lisbon’s Alfama

The Memmo is passed by on a day basis by all the free guided walking tours that go through the Alfama. It’s so well built into the cliffside that few people are able to spot the signage, but this is one of the best places to stay in all of this neighborhood.

That is, if you can get a reservation.

The Memmo is notorious for being perpetually booked out, especially in the summer. Their rooftop pool is a big perk; it overlooks almost all of the lower city and is breathtaking.

The Memmo group have a range of hotels around Lisbon all with appealing modern interiors with a touch on classical flair. Book well in advance if this is where you’d like to rest your head in Lisbon.
