There have been many great British soccer teams over the years. Here is a list of some of the most successful and best teams over the years.

1. Manchester United

Although they have struggled the last few seasons, are among the most successful British teams ever. They have won 66 major honours in their history. Among these honours are 20 league titles, 12 FA Cups and 3 European Cups.

Man United’s success is largely down to two legendary managers, Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson transforming the club into one of the most successful teams of all time.

Under Matt Busby the team were known as the ‘Busby Babes‘ after winning the league with an average age of just 21. One day in 1958 however, disaster struck in one of the darkest days in the club’s history.  Flying back from a European Cup game, the plane carrying the Manchester United team crashed, killing eight players. Busby survived and eventually was able to build another great side, featuring many great players, including Bobby Charlton, George Best and Dennis Law. This side would go on to win many major trophies, including the European Cup for the first time in 1968, after beating Benfica 4-1 in the final.

Alex Ferguson is widely regarded as one of the most successful managers ever, who, completely transformed the club, after years of underachievement. During his time as manager between 1986 and 2013 the club won a staggering 38 trophies, including 13 league titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 European Cups. This was topped with the treble-winning season of 1998/99Ìý and remarkable last-minute winner to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in the final The team showed that they never know when they are beaten as well as the winning mentality instilled in them. Many great players played for the club during this time including Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes and David Beckham.

2. Liverpool

, Man United’s fiercest rivals are another massively successful team that is one of the most iconic clubs, not just in England but globally with a huge fanbase and rich history.

In total  Liverpool have won 64 major trophies in their history. After years of mediocrity, they look like they are finally back to their best. After getting back into the Champions League under Jurgen Klopp, they are capable of competing with the very best, as last season proves, having gone all they and won the European Cup for the 6th time.

The league is now also a certainty this season after a 30-year long absence. Jurgen Klopp has completely transformed them into a team that is both hard to beat but also extremely strong offensively and look capable of dominating for a long time.

The ’70s and ’80s were by far Liverpool’s greatest and most successful period where they would dominate for many years, winning countless trophies. Between 1972 and 1984 they would win the league an amazing 8 times as well as the European Cup 4 times. These wins came mostly under the guidance of two of their most iconic managers: Bill Shankley, still revered to this day, and Bob Paisley. During this time many great players played for club individual Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and Kevin Keegan.

3. Manchester City

is a team that has enjoyed most of its success in the last decade. This is mainly due to wealthy investment which has dramatically changed the fortunes of the club. From being a mediocre club for a long time, they are now one of the top sides in Europe.

In the last decade, they have won the league 4 times and the FA Cup twice. Their first Premier League title was truly remarkable, requiring two last-minute goals to snatch victory. Since then they have not looked back, getting stronger and better each season.

Now Under Pep Guardiola, they have hit a new level, playing a more technical possession-based style of football, dominating most games. Although European glory has evaded them it is only a matter of time before they win the Champions League as well.

Manchester City was also the first English side to collect over 100 points, which they achieved in 2017/18, under Guardiola.  During this time many great players have played for the club, including Sergio Aguero, as well as others such as David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Vincent Kompany.

4.  Celtic

With over 80 trophies won in their history, is a massively successful club. They are a team synonymous with Scottish football, with a strong fanbase and an iconic stadium.

Among the trophies, they have won are 50 league titles and 37 Scottish Cups. They are also the first British side to have won the European Cup, which they achieved in 1967 under legendary manager Jock Stein. Although they have struggled in European football since their place in history should not be forgotten. During his time as manager, the team won an amazing 9 consecutive league titles.

In modern times Celtic are still dominating, in a league that is often considered by many to be having won the last 7 league titles. Some of the top players that have played for the club include Kenny Dalglish, Henrik Larsson and Jimmy Johnstone.

5. Arsenal

is another team that has been in decline for some time, after years of success. Nonetheless, they are still among the most successful teams in England, having won 46 major trophies in their history. Among these honours include 13 league titles and 13 FA Cups.

Their most successful era was the first 10 years under Arsene Wenger, where they would win the league 3 times during this period. After taking over from George Graham, Arsenal became more entertaining to watch. They would regularly challenge Manchester United as one of the powerhouses of English football.

Wenger’s crowning achievement was going the entire 2003/04 season undefeated, the only Premier League side ever to do so. For this, they were awarded special gold trophy to mark their remarkable achievement. During this time, many great players played for the club including the likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires and Tony Adams.

6. Chelsea

is another club on this list who have enjoyed the majority of their success in the last 2 decades. After Billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, the club has invested heavily, leading to considerable success on the field. Since then they have won 5 league titles, 5 FA Cups as well as European trophies in both the Champions League and also the Europa League.

Under controversial Portuguese Manager Jose Mourinho the club won consecutive league titles, becoming a side was feared but also very hard to beat. In his first season in English football, they only lost a game in the league. During this era, many great players have played for the club including Eden Hazard, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Ashley Cole.

Their crowning moment came in 2012, when they won the Champions League for the first time, beating Bayern Munich in the final on penalties in a remarkable game.

7. Everton

is another team that has been in decline for a long time and have been starved of any success for several decades. At one point, however, they were one of the top sides in English football, regularly challenging the likes of Liverpool for the title.

Their most successful period was during the ’80s under manager Howard Kendall.  During this time they won the league twice as well as the FA Cup and league cup in a time fondly remembered by Everton fans. Since then, however, they have been firmly in Liverpool’s shadow, with success being much harder to come. They are however one of only six just premier league ever-presents. Some of the notable players that played for the club include Gary Lineker, Neville Southall and Graeme Sharpe.

8. Nottingham Forest

Although has not been successful for a long time, with many years spent outside the Premier League, they were once a top side. They are most famously remembered for the time under Brian Clough, one of the most iconic managers in the game.

Under Brian Clough, they would be transformed into one of the most competitive teams around. After winning promotion they seemed to become a contender overnight, winning the double the following year. What was most remarkable, however, was their European form. They would win the European Cup in consecutive seasons, a superb achievement, especially for such an inexperienced side and something that was unheard at the time.

9. Aston Villa

is another side with a rich history, having won 23 major trophies. Among these trophies include 7 league titles, 7 FA Cups, but most impressively a European Cup.

Their most successful period was in the ’70s and 80′. During this time they would win the league title, 3 league titles, 1 European Cups and a European Supercup. The European Cup victory was by far their greatest achievement, in a huge upset in the final, beating strong favourites Bayern Munich.

Later years have been less successful, with many ups and downs, they finished second in 1993 but were relegated in 2016. They are now back in the Premier League.

10. Tottenham Hotspur

Although they have not won much in the last decade, is still among the most successful teams overall in England.

Tottenham’s most successful period was under manager Bill Nicholson, winning several major trophies in a 13 year period. Among the trophies, they include 1 league title, 3 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, 1 UEFA Cup and 1 European Cup Winner’s Cup. This period is widely regarded as the greatest in the club’s history. Notably, Tottenham was also the first English side to win the league double, which they achieved in 1961.

In the premier league era, they have mostly been an underperforming side, although in the last few years they have competed for Champions League places. Last season they managed to go all the way to the Champions League final, which they lost 2-0 to Liverpool. Many great players have played for the club over the years, including the likes of Harry Kane, Gareth Bale, Paul Gascoigne, Jimmy Greaves, Gary Linekar and Glenn Hoddle.
