Delroy Lindo is an English-American actor. His interest in acting grew when he was a child after participating in a school play. He has been cast with prominent roles in four Spike Lee films: Da 5 Bloods, Malcolm X, Little in Clockers, and Woody Carmichael in Crooklyn. His acting has made him receive several accolades, such as three Screen Actors Guild, two Critics鈥 Choice Television Awards, NAACP Image Award, Satellite Award and many others.

1. Delroy Was Born to Jamaican Parents

He was born as Delroy George Lindo on November 18, 1952, in Lewisham, south-east London, to Jamaican parents. Delroy鈥檚 mother had immigrated to the UK in 1951 from Jamaica to work as a nurse and his father worked various jobs.

Delroy grew up near Eltham; as a teenager, he and his mother moved to Toronto, Ontario. At the age of 16, they moved to San Franciso.

2. Delroy Became Interested in Acting as a child

While in school, Delroy started getting interested in acting after appearing in a play called Nativity.

3. Delroy Is a Graduate

He began his education at Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys. At age 24, he began his studies in acting at the American Conservatory Theater (a non-profit theatre company), graduating in 1979. Later, he pursued a Master’s degree in fine arts from New York University鈥檚 Gallatin School, graduating in 2014. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate in Arts and Humanities from Virginia Union University.

4. Delroy’s Film Debut Came in 1976

His first film debut came in 1976 alongside the Canadian John Candy comedy Find the Lady. The film plot involves kidnapping schemes all involving the same woman, only for the wrong woman to be taken and the right one runs away with her boyfriend.

The first debut was followed by two other film roles, including an army sergeant in More American Graffiti (1979).

7. Delroy Filmography is Extensive

In 1982, Delroy debuted on Broadway in Master Harold and the Boys which was directed by play鈥檚 South African author Athol Fugard; he turned down Spike Lee for a role in Do the Right Thing, later Lee cast him as Woody Carmichael in the drama Crooklyn (1994) which brought Lindo to notice. Lee gave him various roles, including in Malcolm X, West Indian Archie, a psychotic gangster and a starring role as a neighborhood drug dealer in Clockers.

In the British film Wondrous Oblivion(2003), directed by Paul Morrison, Delroy starred as Dennis Samuels, the father of a Jamaican immigrant family in London in the 1950s. He later confessed he made the film in honor of his parents, who had similarly moved to London in those years. In 2018 autumn, he revisited August Wilson鈥檚 play Joe Turner鈥檚 Come and Gone directing a production at the Berkeley Rep and in 2010, Delroy played the role of an elderly seer, Bynum, in David Lan鈥檚 production of Joe Turner at the Young Vic Theatre I London.

Subsequently, he was the main cast of the NBC fantasy series Believe, The Fox crime drama The Chicago Code, and the ABC soap Blood & Oil.鈥 He also played Adrian Boseman in the CBS legal drama The Good Fight, a role he would star in for the series first four seasons and reprise as a guest star in its fifth season.

He also did a collaboration with Spike Lee in the drama Battlecreek, Da 5 Blood (2020), the horror film Malicious and The Harder They Fall (2021) as Bass Reeves. For his role in Da 5 Bloods, he received critical acclaim and a number of accolades.

8. Throughout his Career, he has Got Several Awards and Nomination

Delroy’s acting career has been successful, which has made him get nominated for various awards. In 1988 Tony Awards nominated him for Best Featured Actor in a Play and Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play for the Drama Desk Award.

In 1998 he won Best Actor-Miniseries of Television Movie at Satellite Award, and in 2009 he won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at NAACP Image Award. The year 2020 was a good year for him because he won four awards.

In 2020 he won Best Actor at the Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Awards, New York Film Critics Circle Awards, and National Society of Film Critics and Best Actor in an Action Movie at the Critics鈥 Choice Super Awards. He also got nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for Satellite Award and Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for Screen Actors Guild Awards.

9. Delroy Had an 8 Day Tour to South Africa

In 1994, Delroy went to South Africa together with other celebrities to urge Black citizens to participate in the country鈥檚 first fully democratic national election.

10. Da 5 Bloods is One of His Best Movies

Delroy starred in the film Da 5 Blood, one of the best films he cast in. the film is about a group of Vietnam vets who decide to return to Vietnam in search of the remains of their fallen squad leader and the treasures they buried while serving there.
