Lennie Michael James was born on October 11, 1965; he is a British actor, screenwriter and playwright. One of his notable television roles is Glen Boyle in the medical drama Critical on Sky 1. He also produced and starred in the Sky Atlantic drama series Save Me, released in 2018 to critical acclaim.

Subsequently, he represented the Destiny and Destiny 2-character Lord Shaxx, who is the anchor of the in-game PVP (Player Versus Player) The Crucible, in which he vocalizes over matches and also has an in-game vendor to purchase items and bounties.

1. Lennie James Spent Eight Years in Foster Care

James was born in Nottingham, was the son of Afro-Trinidadian parents and lived in South London. His mother, Phyllis Mary James, died when he was 10; he and his brother Kester decided to live in a children鈥檚 home rather than being sent to the United States to reside with a relative.

In an interview, James revealed that his mother鈥檚 death changed him forever, and his greatest regret is not getting to know her as an adult. Later in his childhood, he was adopted by his foster parents, but his mother remains a touchstone for everything he does.

While living in South London, he attended school at Ernest Bevin College. As a teen, he aspired to be a professional rugby player and was later introduced to acting after joining a girl he was interested in to audition for a play.

After getting interested in acting, he attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 1988. While at this college, he helped run a campaign against the school鈥檚 plan to expel, which he has said was the bravest thing he鈥檚 ever done. In 2015 he said, 鈥淭hat involved being taken in front of the head and threatening to boycott a big event for the Lord Mayor, even though the head said it would mean they would throw me out鈥.

3. James Used to Work for Britain鈥檚 Social Security Office

 

During his early career, he worked a paying job in the government social security office while moonlighting with a theatre company. James was relieved that his boss tried to send him away for three weeks while he was rehearsing for a play and that when he knew he couldn鈥檛 go, he decided to quit the 9 to 5 world and forge head-on into acting.

4. James Has Starred in More than 20 Films

Since he started his acting career, he has starred in more than 20 films. In 1998 he starred in Les Miserables, in 2000 Snatch, in 2002, 24 Hour Party People, in 2005, Sahara, in 2007 Outlaw.

In 2008, he appeared in a Channel 4 television drama, Fallout, portraying the role of a detective together with another detective cracking a teen-related murder. James also played in an episode of Lie to Me, along with the 2009 AMC/ITV miniseries The Prisoner, of which he stated, 鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 necessarily the easiest gig I鈥檝e ever been on, but it was always acting鈥.

James starred in episodes of the 2010 TV series Human Target as the assassin Baptiste. In 2012, he acquired critical acclaim for his appearance as DCI Tony Gates in BBC Two鈥檚 Line of Duty, produced by Jed Mercurio.

5. James Starred in the Series 鈥淭he Walking Dead鈥

In 2010, James’ guest starred as Morgan Jones in the pilot episode of The Walking Dead titled Days Gone Bye. In 2013 he appeared in his role as Morgan Jones in an episode of the third season of The Walking Dead titled 鈥淐lear鈥.

James returned to the show in a post-credit scene at the end of the mid-season premiere on October 12, 2014, and starred again in a single scene at the end of the mid-season finale on November 30, 2014. He returned for the fifth season finale, played a significant role in the episode, and returned as a main cast member in the show鈥檚 sixth season until the eighth season.

Despite his few appearances on the show, he received recognition for his portrayal of Morgan from critics and fans. He was once stopped by a policeman who wanted to talk to him about the show.

6. He is an Accomplished Playwright and Screenwriter

James wrote the 2000 TV movie Storm Damage, the autobiographical story of a mentor who returns to the foster home he left to help teens there. Storm Damage was nominated for Best Drama Series for a British Academy Television Award. He also wrote the 2004 play The Sons of Charlie Paora, which opened at the London Royal Court Theatre.

7. Throughout His Career, James Has Amassed Many Awards and Nomination

James’ acting career has been successful, making him gain recognition worldwide and even winning awards and nominations. In 2002 he won Black Filmmakers Magazine (BFM) Film and Television Awards in the category Best Male Performance in Film for his work Lucky Break and Online Film & Television Awards.

In 2013, James was nominated for Gold Derby TV Awards for Best Drama Guest Actor and RTS Television Award for Best Actor Male. He was nominated for Fangoria Chainsaw Awards in 2016, Saturn Awards, and many more.

8. James Works as a Mentor

He works as a mentor to black inner-city children, and he says he rejects the importance people attach to fame and celebrity. James said, 鈥淏oys and men in our community need to be aware of the guy who gets up every morning and goes to the job that he doesn鈥檛 necessarily love to support his family. They are the heroes my community needs to celebrate鈥.

9. James is a Married Man

James lives in Los Angeles, California, with Giselle Glasman. The couple has three daughters together; he is the primary cook for his family and has admitted a liking for Caribbean cuisine. He is a football fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC and Valencia Club de Futbol (from Spain).

He confined an open 鈥渓etter to my younger self鈥 for 鈥淭he Big Issue magazine. In his letter, he wrote about the pain of losing his mother at a young age. 鈥淚t hit me quite strongly.
