Twickenham Stadium is located in Twickenham city, southwest London, England owned by the Rugby Federation Union.

It’s the home stadium for the England national rugby union team and all their home matches are played there.

It鈥檚 one of the biggest stadiums in the world, the second largest in the United Kingdom.

The land where the stadium was once a cabbage farm until 1907 when it was sold to the Rugby Union.

1 It is one of the Oldest Stadiums in Europe

The land was purchased in 1907 for 拢5,500, and I t was used to grow cabbages, hence the nick name Cabbage Patch.

The first stands were constructed in early 1908 and the first game, between Harlequins v. Richmond, was played on 2 October 1909. The former ran out 14-10 winners in front of 2,000 spectators. The legendary fly-half Adrian Stoop featured in the game for Harlequins. His influence in rugby is still highly remembered, as he is considered to have revolutionized the way modern rugby is played.

 The first-ever international match played at Twickenham saw England beat Wales 11-6 in 1910.

2 It is the Second Largest Stadium in the United Kingdom

Twickenham is the second largest stadium in the United Kingdom behind Wembley and is the fourth largest sporting arena in Europe.

It has an extra capacity that can hold 2000 more spectators than the Stade de France. Its  total pitch size is 125 x 70 meters, and 410 x 230 feet.

The official seating capacity of the stadium is exactly 82,000, and 150 executive suites, making it the biggest stadium in the Six Nations.

3 Its where England vs. Wales was Broadcasted Live on the Radio for the First Time

It was here in 1927 that England vs. Wales was broadcast live on the radio for the very first time.

In 1938, the 52nd Calcutta Cup was played out in front of cameras that broadcasted the game live on television for the very first time.

Eleven years later, the BBC delivered its first television broadcast whereby England lost to Scotland 16-21.

Twickenham was the first stadium in Europe to have unlimited Wi-Fi.

4 It is a Venue for Both Domestic and International Rugby Union Matches

Twickenham hosts the annual London leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series.

It also hosts the Cup championship final and third-place match of the annual London leg of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series, and the domestic Middlesex Sevens competition.

It is also the venue for the Premiership Rugby final.

Harlequins’ Big Game at Christmas time and an additional annual fixture hosted by Harlequins in late spring.

Anglo-Welsh Cup, Heineken Cup, and Champions Cup finals have also been held in the past.

The stadium is also host to The Varsity Match between Oxford and Cambridge, the English schools’ Daily Mail Cup Final, and the Army Navy Match which forms the culmination of the annual Inter-Services Competition.

 5 It has Hosted Two Rugby World Cups

In  1991 the world cup  tournament was the first held in the Northern hemisphere.

It was hosted jointly by England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and France – who made up the Five Nations teams.  Australia was the winner on that occasion with New Zealand winning the 2015 tournament.

The Stadium also hosted semi-finals in 1999 including the France victory over New Zealand, where the French slammed the All Blacks with a 43-31 scoreboard.

6 It is Home of the Rugby Museum

In 1996, the rugby museum was opened in the east stand of Twickenham Stadium and in 2007, it officially became the World Rugby Museum.

It opens every day other than Monday, thus attracting visitors from near and far.

It covers the global scene, not just English rugby.

The World Rugby Museum has the most extensive collection of rugby football memorabilia in the world. It has over 25,000 recorded objects, 7,000 pieces of archival material, and 7-8,000 photographs.

There are other rugby memorabilia such as boots, balls, jerseys, programs, match tickets, books, and assorted paraphernalia

 Fans can see some fascinating relics, including an England jersey from the first ever international between them and Scotland in 1871.

7 The Stadium is Owned and Operated by the Rugby Football Association RFA

Back in the early 20th century, the RFU didn鈥檛 have its stadium and used to play at other venues such as Crystal Palace.

The major success of their games and the sold-out stadiums made them realize that owning their stadium would be very beneficial.

Therefore, some leading committee members of the governing body of the sport decided to purchase some land with a total area of 10.25 acres 4 hectares for 拢5,500 in 1907 to build their stadium.

Committee member William Williams and treasurer William Cail led the purchasing process.

8 The RFU has its Headquarters at the Stadium

The stadium is owned by the governing body of rugby union in England known as the Rugby Football Union RFU.

This organization was founded in the year 1871 and used to be the international governing body of the sport until 鈥淲orld Rugby鈥 was founded in 1886.

The RFU not just operates and manages Twickenham Stadium but also has its headquarters in the stadium as well.

9 The Final Redevelopment was Completed in 2006

The South Stand after redevelopment, April 2008. Photo By Pete Baugh.  In the early 2000s, the RFU started to design the stadium again. By 2004, the plan was approved and the redevelopment started the following year, effectively increasing the capacity to 82,000 spectators.

It also included a four-star Marriott hotel with 156 rooms and 6 VIP suites with a nice view of the field. To make this happen, the south stand was demolished and rebuilt and the 拢80 million project was completed on November 5, 2006.

As with many of the biggest stadiums in the world, the stadium isn鈥檛 just used for sports but also international concerts.

 Some of the most famous artists in the world have performed at Twickenham Stadium such as Beyonc茅, Rihanna, Eminem, U2, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, and Iron Maiden, to name just a few.

Twickenham has also held conventions for Jehovah鈥檚 Witnesses in 2016 and 2017.

 American Football has been played there as part of the NFL London Games agreement.
