Who is Macron, the New French President?

Where does he come from?

Emmanuel Macron was born in a wealthy Family. Both his parents are doctors: Jean-Michel Macron and Fran莽oise Nogues. Divorced in 2010, they had two other children together: Laurent and Estelle who also became doctors, just like their parents. On his father鈥檚 side, his grandmother comes from Bristol, in the United Kingdom. That might explain why Emmanuel Macron is actually the first French president who speaks very good English. On his mother鈥檚 side, his grandmother comes from a more modest family: her father used to work as a Station Master and her mother as a maid. Emmanuel Macron actually declared that he owes her his left-wing commitment.

What鈥檚 his academic background?

Born and raised in Amiens, a small city 100km north of Paris, Emmanuel Macron went to a school there where he stayed until the end of 11th grade. In 1994 he was a contest winner of the 鈥渃oncours g茅n茅ral de fran莽ais鈥�. Right after that, he decided to leave Amiens, to carry on his studies in Paris. There he went to the most prestigious French high school: Henri-IV from which he graduated with a scientific baccalaureat.

After high school, he got into a literature 鈥渃lasse pr茅paratoire鈥� in Henri-IV itself. Then he tried to get into the ENS(Ecole Normale Sup茅rieure), but he failed the tests, twice. So, he went to the Nanterre university to study philosophy. Once he got his masters in philosophy, he started to study at Sciences Po, where five other French presidents (from the 5th republic) went. He graduated in 2001 and went to l鈥橢NA (Ecole Nationale d鈥橝dministration) afterwards. Three other French presidents went to that school as well.

Emmanuel Macron, the incarnation of the French 鈥淩enouveau鈥�?

Emmanuel Macron, as a candidate in the French election, used to claim that he was, something new, different from the rest of the French politicians. But he actually went to the exact same schools as a lot of famous politicians. However, he did bring something new to French politics, as his government is made up of persons coming from the left-wing and people from the right-wing. Moreover, after winning the l茅gislatives elections, La R茅publique En Marche, made a lot of people coming from the civil society -without a political background- enter the National Assembly.

How did he get there?

When he got out of l鈥橢NA, in 2004, Emmanuel Macron started to work for the state, in the financial general inspection area. Three years later, he was named Deputy Reporter General of the Attali committee. Working for the state, got him plenty of opportunities to connect himself with a lot of important figures like Fran莽ois Hollande who he met in 2006. But then in 2008, he started working for a private bank: Rothschild & Cie, where he made much more money than what he used to working for the state. On the 15th of May 2012, Emmanuel Macron became the Deputy Secretary-General to the French president of the time: Fran莽ois Hollande.

In just a few weeks, he stood out as a young figure. Two years later, on the 26th of August 2014, Emmanuel Macron joined the 2nd government of Manuel Valls. This way, he became the new Minister of Economy, Industry and Digital. In that position, he worked on a lot of projects, the most famous of them being: the creation of national bus lines, the creation of international touristic zones, the allowing of Sunday work, the reform of the driver鈥檚 licence and the liberalization of some professions. On the 6th of April 2016, Emmanuel Macron created his own political party: En Marche! Finally, on the 30th of August 2016, Emmanuel Macron resigned as minister and devoted himself to his new movement.

Macron鈥檚 way to the Elys茅e

At first, Emmanuel Macron鈥檚 candidature for the French presidency, was not really high in the polls, but quickly, he started to get a lot of media attention: Between November 2016 and January 2017, Emmanuel Macron featured on about 50 covers. Furthermore, some important figures like Fran莽ois Hollande, the old French President, or Najat vallaud-belkacem the old minister of Education, supported his candidature. And above that, the finances of the new born party En Marche! were doing really great.

Before 2017 started, the movement had already raised 3.7 million Euros, only from donations. Slowly, the party got bigger and bigger, and on the 23rd of April 2017, Emmanuel macron was ahead of the first round of the presidential elections, with 24.01% of the votes. On the second round he faced Marine Le Pen, the daughter of Jean Marie Le Pen and candidate of the Front National. Finally, on the 7th of May 2017, Emmanuel Macron won the French presidency with 66% of the votes in his favour.

Who is Brigitte Macron?

Brigitte Macron is Emmanuel Macron鈥檚 wife. Brigitte Macron comes from a famous family in Amiens. She used to teach literature, theater and Latin. Her and Emmanuel Macron met in a theater class in 1993. Back then, Brigitte was teaching, in the Lyc茅e de la Providence where Emmanuel Macron studied. One year later, they fell in love. At that time, Brigitte Macron was married to Andr茅-Louis Auzi猫re. They had three children together: S茅bastien Auzi猫re, Laurence Auzi猫re and Tiphaine Auzi猫re. Brigitte and Andr茅-Louis got divorced in January 2006, and almost two years later, on the 20th of October 2007, Brigitte married Emmanuel Macron. Now that her husband is the French president, Brigitte Macron is France鈥檚 first lady.
